travel out of sweden
by mayburn
We are doing a canal trip from Stockholm to Gothenburg. Then we wish to travel to Newcastle (U.K.). Advice on best way by sea or air? Thanks
Robert

Ryanair have flights from Gothenburg to Glasgow and Stansted. Otherwise flying is via Copenhagen.
There are no longer ferries from Gothenburg to UK.

While you guys are on this subject do you know if it possible to walk from Gathenburg to Stockholm, are there any trails going the full length.

No complete trails between the two no. Sweden being Sweden, you could walk most places anyway with the right of access but that would of course require lots of planning to check where the forests are and how to cross motorways etc.
Then again, it might be possible to combine various trails as long as you'd accept a few breaks of several kilometres here and there. There's a lot of trails east of the narrow lake Vättern for instance and then that could tie up with Sörmlandsleden which takes you from Norrköping to Stockholm...
I also know it would be possible to walk along the towpaths to the canal you'll sail on and that you can most probably walk the above Sörmlandsleden almost to Söderköping to connect with the canal and then when you leave it north of Gothenburg you could walk Trollhättan-Gothenburg on existing local paths and smaller roads. All you'd need for this is to time the independent boats sailing across the two great lakes.

Sorry have not tried that , but there are a few lakes to cross or go around which could make it a long walk. We thought of bikes which are available for hire, but time was our trouble.
thanks for your reply

Another way to get from Gothenburg to Newcastle is to fly with City Airline (www.cityairline.se). They fly direct lines to both Manchester and Brimingham.
Travel Tips for Göteborg
Mmm... chocolate!
by Marpessa
Mmm… I love D’aim chocolate. I’m not sure if you have this in your country, but if you haven’t tried it grab a bar of this yummy Swedish chocolate. In Australia you only seem to be able to find it at IKEA stores, here it’s in every Pressbyrån and 7/11.
D’aim is milk chocolate with a crunchy butter almond centre – the bars are long and thin. Try one!
Göteborg Tip

An hour before we arrived in Göteborg very early in the morning, I left the cabin of the ferry and went on deck to see the archipelago and the first bits of Sweden. It was wonderful, I was thrilled by the nature. (My first Scandinavia experience actually!)
Toilets.

If you need the loo anywhere, it can be found easily, but it costs 5kn per entry. Just prepare 5Kn coins just in case you need the loo, cos they are coin operated self service ones.
Even toilets in MacDonalds is coin-operated at 5Kn per entry.
Free city map
by HORSCHECK
Don't forget to take a free city map of Goteborg at one of the Tourist Information Offices. They have various free maps available. Some also include an overview of the tram network, other ones have a street index. So there is no need to buy a map.
Directions:
Goteborg's two Tourist Information Offices are located in the Nordstan Shopping Centre and at Kungsportsplatsen 2. Apart from that you can already pick up various tourist brochures at the airport.
The best view of Gothenburg!
by Joacim
On Jenny Lindsgatan 14-18 you get the best view over Gothenburg! You see the whole central city and can see the river valley that Gothenburg is built around. It is a fantastic way of taking in the city, perfect place for a picnic in the small park just beside!
What fascinates me most (I know I am strange) is that you can, in one glance, see all kinds of vehicles. Cars, lorrys, buses, trains, trams, ships, ....!
Go to Västtrafik (the public authority responsible for the trams, buses, etc in Gothenburg) and there you can fin how to find Jenny Lindsgatan 14
