New Years Eve

by laurendickie

Hello

I will be in the city on New Years Eve. What happens? Where are the fireworks?
Anything i should do?

Thankyou

Lauren

Well there is plenty to do:-)

You see the fireworks best if you go down to the operahouse in the harbour (in the middle of the city center). he Gothenburg Post (daily newspaper) shoots off one every year at 5M. At midnight you should try to go to higher ground somewhere in the city for the new years toast and to look at all the fireworks everyone shoots at that time of the day :)

Also, if you plan to hit and clubs or such you might want to check if it's a ticket requirement. Some clubs do that for new years.

Travel Tips for Göteborg

You must take the time to walk...

by sarasue

You must take the time to walk the city. It is very centralized unlike Stockholm and there are so many undiscovered areas. You should also definetly see Gamla Stan there. My favorite memories of Göteborg invlove walking around the city in the lovely sun, eating an ice cream while sitting and people watching.

Seaside and meetings in cafés

by Sjalen

Have a picnic in the archipelago (see 'musts') and even if you don't have children, a visit to the Slottsskogen park where the locals relax is a must. Otherwise I just love sitting in a street café or bar and study people and watch the trams whiz by. Göteborg has more cafés than anywhere in Sweden and you will find many in for instance Linnégatan or Vasagatan as well as in Haga. I have so many fond memories after growing up here for 14 years that it would be impossible to pick just one.

We're locals...

by Sjalen

People in Göteborg are very patriotic about their city. They usually dislike Stockholm and anything associated with the East Coast of Sweden. People can travel the world before they set fot in Stockholm. If you need a conversation in a bar, try football. Even the biggest cultural snob knows something about it since the town has so many teams and always host various championships.

Having said all this, it is the most open city in Sweden. Being Scandinavia's largest port, people are used to visitors. But it is so much easier if that visitor is British rather than from Stockholm :)))

GAIS Football Club

by MickeH

There are a few teams in Gothenburg.
IFK, ÖIS, Frölunda and Häcken are some teams.
But THE team is GAIS.

Since there is a new stadium being build where Gamla Ullevi once stood, our temporary home stadium is Ullevi. Way too big for us, but it will have to do for now.
They have a home game every other weekend during the summer. The swedish season starts around april lasts until somwhere around september.
For a complete fixture list, go to: Fixtures Allsvenskan

If you are in Gothenburg, don't miss them!

Also, for further pictures and info, check my GAIS travelogue here: GAIS Travelogue Wear a black and green shirt. Or a black or a green one. 'Cause GAIS plays in the most beautiful of dresses, green and black striped shirts.

Also, memorize theese words: "Heja GAIS"!
Pronounce it: "Hey-ya guys"!

Hisingens promenade

by gubbi1

On the riverside of Hisingen it is excellent to have a walk along the Promenade. In summer it is perfect to sit down at the riveside and enjoy the day watching the ships passing by.

Get there with the Älvsnabben from Klippan or Rosenlund. Any stop on Hisingen is fine.
