My wife and I stayed in the 71-beds (Activ) Kronen Hotel for 6 days at Christmas 2006. Kronen Hotel is one of the better hotels in Andermatt, providing very good service at a reasonable price (especially at today's exchange rate between Euro and Swiss Frank). The hotel has a bar (the Barry Bar), which is not a very popular place. If you prefer a quiet après-ski, it is however the place to be! The hotel has a lounge on the first floor, with comfortable seats for 15-20 people. During our stay, none of the guests used the lounge; which was not surprising to me as the room does not look very attractive. The hotel's restaurant is however a very cousy room with 30-40 seats. The Kronen Hotel is situated right in the center of Andermatt. It is a 3 minute walk to the Gemsstock skilift, and a 8-10 minute walk to the train station and the Nätschen skilifts. There is a (public) shuttle bus that stops right before the hotel entrance. Restaurants, bars and shops are literally around the corner. Without exception, hotel guests during our stay were families and small groups of adults (aged 30 and up). There were no youngsters travelling on their own. Guests were a mixture of Europeans, with no predominant group. The Kronen Hotel has a locked and heated room for overnight storage of skis, snowboards and boots. The room is situated in the hotel's air-raid/nuclear blast/fallout shelter, accessable via narrow steep stairs: very uncomfortable if you wear ski boots and carry skis and poles! The hotel provides fitness, sauna and solarium; the use is not included in the room rates. There a about 10 parking places in front of the hotel reserved for hotel guests. Additionally, there are public parking facilities within a short distance.
If you stay on half board basis, you get an excellent four course dinner. The waitresses are very helpful and polite. Dinner starts between 18:00 and 20:00 hours and takes 1:00 to 1:15 hours. If you prefer more time between the courses, that's no problem. The restaurant is both for hotel guests as well as external visitors. Every table is only sold once a night. Breakfast -- from 7:00 a.m.-- is standard European (continental). I missed the fresh fruit salad. The hotel offers wireless internet. An indication of the rate is CHF 5 (EUR 3) for an uninterrupted 30 minutes from log-in, and CHF 30 (EUR 18) for an uninterrupted 24 hours from log-in. Special packages are available for frequent short log-ins. The connection was not too fast (about 20 kbps), but proved to be reliable. The Kronen Hotel is noisy. As with all old buildings, floors are made of wood. Luckily, all guests were really quiet. Opposite to the raised floors, the exterior walls provided an excellent noise reduction; visitors of the night club opposite the hotel entrance (open till 5 a.m.) -- though noisy -- were difficult to hear inside the hotel rooms.
