Gasthof Frohe Aussicht: Pleasant, Luxurious Hotel

This hotel, whose name can be loosely translated to "Joyous Views," certainly had that. Located on the outskirts of the town of Weissbad, Hotel Frohe Aussicht offers 17 well-appointed rooms, some with spectacular views of the valley. We booked a discounted standard room online in September 2011, which came with a pleasant enough view of a green pasture. Minifrosch got a crib for no extra charge, though he was a bit miffed when it was accidentally placed in the wrong room and caused a slight delay in his nap. The hotel has a well-reputed (read: expensive) restaurant (closed Thursdays). A very nice "Appenzeller Buffet" breakfast is included in the room price.

- Full service, family run hotel with restaurant
- Buffet breakfast included
- Within walking distance of the Schwende train station
- Free parking
- Wheelchair (and stroller) accessible
- Free Wi-Fi in rooms and common areas

Ferienwohnung Inauen: Family-Friendly Guest Apartment

Prices in a traditional hotel can be sky-high in this area, so a private guest apartment (or "Ferienwohnung" in German) can be a great way to save money. This basement studio is for rent from the Inauen family -- Franziska and Bruno, along with children Silvio, Fabienne, Rahel, and Simona. While the apartment itself is a bit on the cramped side, the family was more than happy to accommodate Minifrosch with an extra child bed. He was also welcome to play in the backyard on the swings and slides, as well with a number of ride-on toys. The apartment had a refrigerator and a full stove, which allowed us to cook our own meals and save even more money. It is important to note that, while the family is happy to help in any way they can, this is not a full-service hotel, nor is it a bed-and-breakfast. Note also that you must pay a CHF 50 cleaning fee, which makes it more cost-effective for longer stays.

- Clean, comfortable guest apartment
- Refrigerator and stove for self-catering
- Mandatory CHF 50 cleaning fee
- Stays of 3 days or longer include the Appenzell Card (without free train travel)
