and for a map of the city, click here 5-6 hours is what I plan for my next visit in Fribourg, because I think it is also necessary to walk over some of the giant bridges and explore more of the town than just the citycentre.
It's worth, though, cutting north from Python on the narrow, steeply rising Ruelle de Lycee up to the atmospheric medieval College St-Michel, for most of its history a Jesuit seminary and now part of Fribourg University; the shaded grounds of the academy are utterly peaceful, and there's a terrace from where you can look out over the city. Ancient covered steps, the Escaliers (stairs) du College, lead down from the terrace (nice view over the city) to join the lower end of Rue de Lausanne.
The Town Hall of Fribourg is quite an impressive building, especially when you see it from the backside, where a high basement had to be constructed in order to build it at the edge of a mountain, see my 2nd photo, there is also some old medieval fortification-wall.
Dont miss to take a look into the arches under the big stairs : there you will see an old cannon and an old fire-fighting-wagon (my pics 3-5).
La Neuville
La Neuveville is a neighbourhood that had water-intensive tanning and textile industries and was surrounded in the thirteenth century by a pallisade that was replaced by a wall in the fourteenth century. The Bourguillon and Maigrauge Gates have survived, as well as a part of the wall; the gates to the street called Rue de la Neuveville have not.
The highlight of this neighbourhoods is probably the waste water funecular.
In the Museum for Art and History (Musee d'art et d'histoire) you will find great works of art made by Delacroix, Hodler, Crotti, Tinguely, Marcello and a lot of others and there is also Switzerlands biggest collection of sculptures dating back to the 16th century.
The museum of today was made by connecting the old slaughterhouse with the Ratze Mansion.
