swiss getaway

Boxing Day decided to fly to Geneva for Dinner( one of them daft moments)
Departed from Newcastle, flights were a good price considering 2 days notice)
At the airport we made full use of the free travel ticket to the hotel, you collect it from the baggage area and lasts 80 minutes, and travelled in by train total time of 6 minutes saving £20-£25 on a taxi,
We decided to take the short walk to the Hotel Edelweiss from the station total time 10 minutes , but you could jump on bus number 1 to the hotel,
First impressions was what I excepted,Receptionist was really helpful we arrived early at 11.30am and check was 2.00pm but this was no problem, as a room was ready,We were on the fourth floor so used the lift which is small, everywhere tastefully decorated in pine wood and painted flowers,
The room was perfect, clean, fresh plenty of space,The bedroom is decorated in pine with painted flowers (see Photos) good size bed, mini bar rather expensive but there is a supermarket opposite the hotel, bathroom clean modern plenty of hot water, heating working, plenty of wardrobe space,
Not happy you had to pay 12 swiss franes for a tea/coffee tray per day.Room service available.

At reception we received a free travel pass for the duration of the stay, only used it to return to the airport again saving on the taxi fare,

Stayed in the Resturant, that night which was a new experience sampling different fondues etc
.Live music, helpful staff,a bit pricely but for one night worth it,

Overall a delightful stay worth the money, will return in the summer for a longer stay,

Swiss Schmultz

Two nights here in pure Swiss suroundings. Very touristy, all pine and fondue, but if that's what you want then it delivers.
Clean rooms on seven floors.

Unique Quality: 100 metres from lakeside.
The level of service is good with all staff in traditional costume/uniforms.
Swiss restaurant is attached with live music and traditional food.

Edelweiss Manotel Hotel: Superior Service

I had a great experience with the Edelweiss. I lead a group of colleagues on a business trip to Geneva for one week and this is where we stayed. I had numerous requests and special issues for the hotel, and they could not have been more helpful. They blocked rooms, offered us a special rate, handled our package delivery needs, took faxes, made copies, changed rooms according to preferences, handled our dinner reservations, parking problems, etc, etc. They knew us all by name and greeted us every time we arrived. I really could not have been happier. For the moderate rating of the hotel, I think they far outshine their stars. Past that, the rooms are charming, clean, and sufficiently modern for comfort. The location is also great, allowing us to walk to dinner most nights. Not only do I recommend the hotel, it is where I will be staying from now on.

Alpine adventure

The staffwere very freindly and helpful. The location was pretty decent..close enough to walk to old town, close enough to the trams to the palais des nations and in the sleazy part of town so you can see that not only America is filthy.

Unique Quality: The hotel restaurant was alot of fun. I got to blow on a huge Alpine horn and enjoyed raclette. I had the best chocolate fondue. It was a good experience and the entertainment was fun. NOT a place to hang out to see Locals. This was definatly a tourist trap.

Great hotel!

by TripAdvisor Member Manchester-England

Loved this hotel. Only ten minutes walk from the station...but one word of advice...some of the streets surrounding the hotel are somewhat insalubrious....one of the streets in particular (rue de montrechoux i think it was..) seemed to be in Genevas red light district, and the street we were directed to walk down from the station passed through what appeared to be a kind of ghetto/municipal play area that put me in mind of the bronx.. However DONT let that put you off this hotel, as these streets are enough distance away for it to be of no concern.
The hotel, staff, food, restaurant & rooms are faultless.
The soap/towels/shampoo etc were changed EVERY day. I've never known that before, where even a bar of soap that had been used just once was changed for a brand new bar the following day! Wonderful!
Its five minutes to the lake from the hotel and maybe 15/20 mins to the old town, which is just lovely and a must see

Ueber-Swiss hotel - Great!

by TripAdvisor Member The England Family

A great hotel, within 10 minutes walk from station, and near to the lake. Rooms were large and comfortable, bed very comfortable. Reception friendly and helpful. The restaurant was a sort of tongue-in-cheek Swiss theme restaurant with St Bernards, yodelling, men dressed up playing the saw, and bells etc....All good fun. Meal was great, and the hotel gave us a voucher for two free starters. Compared with other Swiss restaurants this was good value too. Would thoroughly recommend it. Only downside was the breakfast buffet which was sparse and unimaginative and not worth the CHF15...

Great Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member EvieVee

Great welcome from staff when we arrived at 11 pm. We were immediately impressed with their efficiency and friendliness. The lobby and sitting area were spotless, with internet connection supplied. Our room was large, spotless and different from the usual hotel rooms, with pine pannelling and stencilling on the walls. There were twin beds, a double wardrobe, 2 bedside cabinets, 1 corner table, 1 armchair, 1 bed settee, a small wall table and a round ocassional table - and still plenty of space! There was also a small safe with clear instructions which was simple to use. The bathroom was large with all toiletries supplied and changed/replaced every day. The beds were comfortable, and a temperature control ensured the room was never too warm/cold.

Breakfast was the usual on the Continent, with a good variety of cold meats, cheese, yoghurts, cereals, breads, fresh and tinned fruit, fruit juices and eggs.

The evening meal was EXCELLENT - tasty and hot and cooked to your demands. We had been advised to go to the old part of Geneva to eat, but after a day in the mountains, we didn't feel like going out again, so were glad we had booked the evening meal. It also appeared to be popular with non-residents as many came to eat - and this continued until after 10 pm. If we returned to Geneva and weren't staying at the Eidelweiss, we would definitely eat there. The hotel provided entertainment - singing/yodelling and various instruments being played, including cowbells, spoons and a saw!

When we checked out, although the hotel offered a secure place to leave our baggage, we decided to leave it at the 'Left Luggage' at the train station, about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. This only cost approx £3 50 for the whole day, which was a surprise because everything else was so expensive. The train from the station to the airport took only about 10 minutes and the walk to the airport was just across the road from the airport station.

Geneva is very expensive, with a 500 ml bottle of Coca Cola costing the approx £2 50. If you're waiting to buy jewellery, chocolate or souvenirs in the airport, we found that it was as cheap - and sometimes cheaper to buy in Geneva. It was also difficult to find a restaurant that even offers no-smoking areas, never mind a no smoking restaurant! We were surprised to see so many people, including children, begging on the streets.

Excellent hotel

Stayed here for two nights in the first week of December with my girlfriend.

Really can't fault it. Excellent staff, very friendly, good location, scrupulously clean, comfortable and decent sized room and the restaurant is OK.

Only thing to be ready for is the rather hurdy gurdy nature of the the decor and style. Oh and this is reflected in the live entertainment in the restaurant so don't go there for a romantic meal! If you wan't to see what I mean have a look at their website...

beautiful quiet hotel

by TripAdvisor Member sylviadickson

stayed in this hotel for 3days found staff very friendly and our room was very large for 3star hotel excellent bathroom facilities, read a review stating breakfast poor we found the breakfast very adaquate boiled eggs, meats, cheeses, cereals and plenty of varieties of bread. rooms were clean.

Excellent!

by TripAdvisor Member pessutojr

We arrived at the hotel a few hours before the advertised check-in time, yet the room we booked via the hotel website was already available for us. We asked for a quiet room, and they gave us a room at the top-right corner of the hotel. Fantastic!

Even though the view from the hotel top floor is not the greatest, you can enjoy a 15 minute walk alongside lake Geneva to the centre of town. The hotel is located in a quiet area of Geneva.

One of the things that we enjoyed most was the hotel restaurant. You can enjoy an exquisite fondue whilst listening to live typical swiss music. Just make sure you make the reservation in advance. We tried to make a reservation two hours before, but it was already booked up for the time we wanted. Nonetheless a booking was made for the sooner they could fit us in.

The staff is friendly and discrete. I really recommend the hotel and would go back there again!
