by incikboncuk

Hello,
We will be in geneva on 10-14th of october(first time). We will spend 1 day exploring city center but we also want to see countrysides. we heard about zermatt? do you think is it worth to see in that season? or can you suggest any other place? we do not interested in shopping. we want to see local culture.
Thanks
Inci

I went to Zermatt as a daytrip from Geneva on March 2004 and it was awesome. Don't know how it is on October though.
In case you cannot make it to Zermatt you might consider visiting the cities around the lake, like Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux. I would advise you to pick two of the three, and spend half day in each.
Since you are interested in countryside, maybe you could do Montreux (stunning sight of the mountains from the lake, and you have the Chillion castle to visit) and Vevey (where Charlie Chaplin used to live in his final years). They are close to each other and reachable by train from Geneva.
Good luck!

If by culture you mean people with traditional clothes, blowing the long horn! etc. you maynot find them in the places you have suggested, unless there is an occassion.but montreaux is very beautiful(every part of switzerland is!)and there is a castle that you could explore there.read my pages on montreaux.
I loved Zermatt and going up the Gornegrat on the Cog train.
Have a good trip,

If the weather is nice Zermatt will be great in October....if the weather is bad you might not be able to see the mountains. However you can still see the typical houses of the area. I would have recommended you Montreux Lausanne and Castle of Chillon as well. For some more culture you could go to Gruyere. This is a nice littel village with a castle and a cheese factory where you can watch the different processes.

Travel Tips for Geneva

Night-time Geneva

by aliante1981

Yes, I have noticed (and I bet I’m not the only one person who has) that almost any city looks pretty at night or late in the evening.

Cool weather makes it possible for me to enjoy the place (no terrifying heat) rather than worry about a sun stroke, dusk makes several unpleasant features of (especially big) cities less noticeable. For example, I more often notice litter in morning than in the evening… Sunsets provide for pretty pictures, both live and for photographs. There are fewer people, and those who are out, generally are in no hurry.

Now, the only thing that might stop me enjoying my night-time stroll is high crime rate. But, fortunately, this is not the issue with Geneva. Indeed, I’ve spent countless evenings just wandering in the city centre.

Among my top night-time (usually meaning with best lights on them) attractions are:

- St. Pierre Cathedral
- The Water Jet
- Lake Geneva’s Shores
- Fireworks’ shows (but this is an entirely different matter)

Interesting to visit:

La maison Clarté of architect Le CORBUSIER,(Charles Edouard Jeanneret, 1887-1965).

Date of construction: 1930-1932.

Address: 2, rue Saint Laurent. Genève.
IN SWITZERLAND:

If you are interested in Le Corbusier I suggest also to visit:

–House at the Lake Leman, called 'la petite maison'. Corseaux (VD).

Found more info at www.athenaeum.ch/corseaux.htm

Not far from the city center you find the Parc de Bastions. It is located behind Uni Bastions and has a separate station. Lie down after a stressful day. Enjoy a game of street chess or some drinks at the restaurant at the entrance.
