2 day stay
by FraMauro
I am staying for 2 nights, taking the TGV from Paris on Day 1 and have two options - the 9 am and the 1 pm train. If I take the 1 pm. train, I will reach the hotel around 5.30 pm. Will I be able to do the local sightseeing and a boat ride to Chillon. The only two budget-friendly options as of now are Hotel Savoy and Hotel Ramada Encore and even they are "on request". Can you recommend any other family-friendly hotels in the lake area around 150 euros.
Thanks

I believe there is some trade shown on the dates I plan to stay May 4-6. Is it a better option to reach Geneva by 4.30, store the luggage in station lockers, do sightseeing till 8 (enough sunlight till 9pm?), then proceed to Montreaux and stay there for 2 nights and onward to the BO. Will the jet be working? How far is Montreaux from Geneva by boat?

There is more than two TGV's daily from Paris to Geneva. If you want to do some local sightseeing I'd suggest taking one as early as possible however. If you'll only be at the hotel at 5:30pm you will not have the opportunity to see something outside of Geneva.
The website www.sbb.ch will show you when the trains run from Paris to Geneva, and also from Geneva to Chillon (both trains and boats).
Taking the boat all the way from Geneva to Chillon takes a long time. Better take the train to Lausanne, take the metro down to Ouchy and take the boat from there. You can also get to Chillon by bus.

Hang out near the water! The Fete de Geneve is the ideal time to visit (late July-early August) as there are sooooooo many things going on! Booths with food and assorted stuff for sale, ranging from clothes to jewellery to hats, etc. There is also a carnival near the water with rides and games. Arriving at the airport, on my first trip to Europe, and finally realizing that I was indeed in Switzerland!!! What a rush! Aside from that, just wandering around the city and seeing the World Trade Organization building or the World Intellectual Property Organization headquarters absolutely floored me!
Confederation Day Fireworks’ Show
by aliante1981
This is one of the two fireworks’ shows that take place between the end of July and the 10th of August (that’s approximately). Though the Confederation Day falls on August, 1, the big fireworks’ show to celebrate the day takes place the following Saturday.
As for the Geneva’s day fireworks, taking place in the same time period, real masters of the fireworks’ art (for it’s nothing short of a real art here, in Geneva) are invited, and locals of the same caliber perform.
In reality, it’s nothing short of the theatre. Light and music for more than an hour provide for great entertainment. A topic is usually selected. On one Confederation Day (can’t remember when I’ve seen it…), for example, the theme for at least part of the fireworks’ show has been… the first ‘Harry Potter’ film, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. There was even the Sorting Hat’s song.
The only drawback to the show is the huge number of people watching. But great shows always attract great crowds, right?? This led me to understand that buying tickets for specially reserved places is definitely a good idea. I’ve bought them several times, and do not complain! Hey! You’ll have ho heads in front of you interfering with the fireworks’ during the show.
Rollerskating along the lake
by Djinn76
I took my rollers with me thinking the lake surroundings would be a great place to ride.
Well, it's fun bun not entirely true. I thought I could skate along the lake for quite a while. Indeed only the area around the city has its own dedicated path. If you go a bit further, the lake become private :-(
At the end, that still provides a couple of kilometers of fun but be careful, this could be quite crowded as well!
Definitely better, every Monday there is a ride organized by locals, they know where to take you.
Have a look to the following website for more details.
Chateau de Chillon
by eranda
Two sides in a historically unique castle: On one hand the sturdy fort towards the mountainside, on the other hand the magnificent residence towards the Lake of Geneva. From 1733 this former protectorate, which was given over to ruin, shows itself today brilliantly renovated, as a unique memory of the eventful history from the twelfth to the sixteenth century.
Chillon is said to be sole both in site and approach one side a stronghold facing the antique road towards Italy, the other a princely house facing the lake. It’s positively a most impressive view, as well as being splendidly situated so as to give immense views crossways the irrigate with the Alps in the aloofness.
The fortress has a long and famed olden times the earliest written orientation dates from 1160 (though it’s believed that the rock on which the castle was built was occupied in antiquity), and Roman coins and debris were found during excavations in 17the centaury

Fête de la Musique. 3 days of party: Friday, Saturday and Sunday around 21st of June.
FREE Live music everywhere in city. You can attend a classical concert at the Grand Théâtre (Geneva's opera), or prefer alternative rock sounds, cool jazz, hot latino music in the parks and places outside.
The nicest partytime in Geneva (for people living in Geneva, tourists know better the Fête de Genève with its Lake Parade in August, but you are not a tourist, so you will like more the Fête de la Musique). Depending on the weather: t-shirt or k-way.
