Geneva is a nice, quiet,...
by mari2marc
Geneva is a nice, quiet, little town. Actually, you may find it too quiet: boring, especially at night. And your travel guide may not be very helpful. The downtown is definitely not an interesting spot at night.
Go to the Old Town, or better, around Place du Cirque and Rue du Stantd, or to Carouge if you are interested in some nightlife. The 'red light district' (les Pâquis) is very safe and has a lot of restaurants too. Don't be afraid to go there.
During the day, travel guides are usually more helpful. My special recomendation is to visit 2 very beautiful parks: the Jardin Botanique on the right side of the lake and the Parc des Eaux-Vives on the left side.
If you like symphonic music...
by bratsch
If you like symphonic music try to catch a concert by l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, founded in 1918 by Ernest Ansermet. The orchestra’s home is the Victoria Hall, built on the occasion of the Queen’s visit to Geneva. The hall burned down in the early 1980’s and was reconstructed identically to it’s past except for the painted ceilings.
village party in center town
by zoup
Going up the old town in rue de la fontaine, you'll find a staircase going through the big wall on the right. it leads you on the lawn next to the cathedral. on the first (or second) week-end of september is held what looks like a village party, or rather here a 'neighborhood' party, so chance to talk with locals around food and drinks. don't expect anything too fancy, but i found it by chance, and the change between before the stairs, with young people going to the bars, and up the stairs with families sitting on benches at tables in the grass talking around wine and 'coq au vin' was quite radical...
Once we left the flower clock...
by rtschneider
Once we left the flower clock we headed in the direction away from the lake. We walked through a main tourist area and then we walked up (literally up hill) away from the main tourist areas. We got some pretty cool views of the city. Apparently not too many tourist head up that way because we had trouble finding resturants that we open at 2pm unlike in the tourist areas.
Happening nightclub
by vanessadb about MAD (Moulin à Danses)
MaD stands for Moulin à Danse (Dance Mill) and is pretty much an institution in Geneva. You can dance, listen to live music when they have concerts, or just have a drink at the bar and people watch.
The legal age to go clubbing in Switzerland is 18.
On the weekends, only members and their guests are allowed to go in, so you will have to meet the locals and ask them to go in with them! Casual or not no casual.
