The Alps account for only 1/7 of Switzerland's total area. (58% of the country lies in the center of the Alps.) The average height of Swiss mountains is about 1700 m / 5600 ft; some 100 peaks reach 4000 m / 13,000 ft or more. The highest point being the Dufour Peak (4634 m / 15,209 ft) in the Monta Rosa massif (Valais canton).
A treat for the true gastrophile
by gastricnomad
This is without a doubt the regions most up and coming talents.
Philipe Landry seems to be driven by a unquenched search for perfection. To the humble food lover there can be no mistaking that the homely service and warm and inviting dining environment is exactly what his michelin counterparts are missing. To the connoisseur, an intelligently engineered adventure for your taste buds that will not be soon forgotten.
Each meal is crafted with the precision and unsurpassed attention to detail. The Service is extremely warm and friendly. On any given evening Locals of Chernex will be found enjoying the atmosphere and will only be to happy to laud their local hero.
Phillipe and Claudia make an extra special effort to ensure that your experience is genuine. They are natural hosts, with a penchant for genuine European hospitality. By the end of your meal, you will feel as if your dining with long lost friends.
It is a 5 minute train from Montruex to Chernex. This gem comes highly recommended.
Watch over the lake from Glion
by Banty
It is a little bit tricky at the moment (2007) to get to Glion because there are lots of road works - or you simply go by train.
From Glion you have a very nice view over the complete region. You can enjoy the viewing on a cafe terasse or from the old church at the end of one street.
Near the church seems to be a nice place to stay for the night but I did not try it...
Montreux Jazz Festival
by Callavetta
My 2002 Switzerland trip was inspired by the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival. As with many trips, the seed that germinates it is not always what the trip blossoms into. I found the festival a disappointment.
If you want to get tickets online, be sure to be online the minute sales begin (which is sometime in the middle of the night on the west coat of the US). Tickets are gone nearly instantly. It is possible to buy tickets at the venue from "scalpers". But I was not willing to pay $300 for BBKing tickets (when I've seen BBKing at home for $40).
I did enjoy a couple of very good free concerts in the open settings along the lake; one Salsa and one Reggae group. And I've got my T-shirt and can always say, "I've been to the Montreux Jazz Festival". (But this year I think I'll stick with Winter Park and the Russian River!)
Why not explore the castle.

The visit to Montreux started earlier witha stroll along the promenade, then we took the train to Rochers de Naye, there we walked around and took in many vies, saw the Marmots, had a snack at the restaurant, visited the Alpine Garden passing the Stupa on the way.
On the return rail trip we left the main train at Glion and headed to Territet down the steep funicular, where we were within sight of the Chateau.
For a fee of SWF 10.00 and witha guide sheet in hand for our language we are ready to explore.
Be prepared to climb some stairs and walk over some rough floors and I do not think there is a way to avoid those bus loads of tourists, but let's go. Check out the Pandora's Box.
