Ernen
The village of Ernen was approx 30 - 40 minute walk from Fiesch - we could see its church easily at the back of our hotel base but the river was in-between and meant a longer walk around to cross the torrent. Ernen is famous for its classical music festival during the summer and for its architecture - in 1979, Ernen was awarded the Wakker Prize for the preservation of its architectural heritage. The paintings of William Tell on the Tell House are reputed to be the old paintings of this type in Switzerland. Ernen also still has three white gallows outside of the village. Even though nobody was hung in recent times, the locals still look at it as a means to frighten off burglars, thieves and crooks.
