Aletsch Glacier Hike Adventure I
For me this was THE hike to do in this area - the one we had seen on the cover of our hiking map. We had waiting until our last day in Fiesch to have perfect weather for this hike and to make it even more memorable it was Swiss National Day. Its a longish hike - 5.5 hours they say but some of the timings along our route marker were definitely out - so allowing for photo stops, lunch stops and then even more photo stops its a good days hike - we started walking at 9.15am and eventually got back to our base at 7.00pm (including journey back from Bettmeralp to Betten and train to Fiesch). Full route of this hike, which circuits the Eggishorn is Fiescheralp - Gletscherstube - Märjelensee - Biel - Moosfluh - Blausee - Bettmersee - Bettmeralp. It undulates (??!!)between 2200 and 2400m, then down to 1950m.
The day began by walking 5 mins from our hotel to the gondola station where we glided up to Fiescheralp and took an easy path towards the Fiescher Gletscher. A bit of a ziz zag climb up towards a cross with a wonderful view of this glacier - the more impressive one was to follow. We rounded the shoulder of the Eggishorn past a small lake to reach the restaurant Gletscherstube . Time to here from Fiescheralp was stated as 2hr 40 on the way markers and with our stops and being slower on the uphill section its was just after 12.30 - perfect time for Rosti :-)) Its a popular place so we had to wait a while for our meal - perhaps that's what put our timings out. (continues on next tip) Good shoes and a map.
