Our original plan was to climb down via Chessjen glacier (guide is not necessary) to Heidefriedhof (2734 m) and from there follow a supposedly wellmarked path on the south-eastern slope of the Mittagshorn and descend to the mountain station of the Plattjen suspension railway (2570 m). However we knew this was the only cable-car not running during our weeks stay in Saas Fee (it opened the day we left :-S) plus the walk was not declared open yet. It would not have been safe and despite that having seen the terrain I was glad! A steep descent to Saas Almagel did not appeal either and really requires proper mountain equipment to take that hike - ropes and crampons etc.....
