Does anyone know the symbolism of the many items hanging on the outside crucifixes in Saas Fee? I have heard, only, that the rooster is a reminder that Peter would deny Christ by the time the rooster crowed three times. There is a hand, a small hammer, other tools, a rising sun, a side view of the sun, some "swords", a ladder, and much more.
Arma Christi - the instruments involved in the passion of Christ. All these items are mentioned in the gospels: nails and hammer, scourge, spear, dice, robe, reed, flagellation column, crown of thorns, stone, torches, ladder, vinegar bucket, and often also the rooster.
Fasnacht is the word the swiss use for carnival.
This event takes place in February and last for approx 14 days.
The event is opened by a huge parade of swiss dressed in funny costumes during the day and in the evening with a concert of what they call gugenmuzik. The concert will be held at the leisure centre.
On the last day of the event there is a huge party at the gemeinde haus until early in the morning. Most restaurants will open at 5am to serve "kater-fruhstuck" (breakfast).
