Travel Tips for Saas-Grund
Rock boulder path
As we contoured around the mountain though we had to traverse a boulder park - its not as bad as it looks and every few stones there were clear red paint marks showing the way. The stones were quite large and mainly flat to step on too - it was quite safe really.
High Level Hiking
In the Saastal region you are spoilt for choice for high leve hikes which are not difficult if combined with "assists" with the cable cars and thus you can enjoy great scenery without too much effort. We enjoyed hikes from Mattmark dam to Saas Almagel, Saas Grund to Saas Almagel and Saas Grund to Gspon - thus covering most of the valley in 3 hikes.
Other popular paths take you over the Antrona pass into Italy and as this map shows there are hikes right around the mountain. The path to Gspon is a well known historical path and many consider it a highlight of the area - i'll cover this hike in more detail in the off the beaten path section. Waterproofs - weather can be so changeable in the moutians, good walking boots with ankle support. Bring a picnic and plenty of water. Oh and don't forget that sunscreen - it can be very deceptive when hiking at altitude.
Kreuzboden - Gspon IX
We peeped inside the little chapel - isn't it lovely to find that they don't have to be locked, no vandals here obviously. It was a simple affair with its shepherd and sheep altar - very fittig for its alpine meadow situation and modern colourful stained glass windows which all featured some alpine animals - it really was quaint.
