The Most Horrible Hotel Stay
We stayed for 3 nights (check-in 8 Apr 09 / check-out 11 Apr 09) and encountered the most ridiculous, unfair experience. We were robbed by the owner of the hotel.
When we check-out on 11 Apr 09, the owner of the hotel said that he had to charge us for a penalty of 50 CHF because he saw the ashtray in the room for the 1st day (the ashtray was put in the balcony when we check-in) so he believed we did smoke in the room.
I told him I couldn't pay for that because:
1. No one from the hotel ever told us it's a non-smoking room before, there's no non-smoking sign in the room.
2. There's an ashtray in the balcony, so we thought it's a smoking room.
3. We only smoke in the room for the first night ONLY. The next day we saw a note left by the hotel, then we didn't smoke in the room for the next 2 days.
The owner didn't give a response so we thought he had agreed with that.
When we paid, the owner said the total was 840 CHF. It's the correct amount of room charge so we gave him 900 CHF for change. But when he took the money, he said that he had to charge extra 50 CHF for the penalty, so the total is 890 CHF. (What a cheater!)
He led us to the room and showed the non-smoking sign. But it was in french, and there's NO non-smoking logos. We told him we do not know french. The owner said, you must understand french if you come here. (It's the most riduculous thing we've ever heard. We have to pay the penalty because we don't know french? It's a serious racial discirimination.)
He also claimed that there's a contract when the booking was made through booking.com. He tried to find the contract from his desk but he failed. Then he insisted we should had bring the contract. We only had the confirmation page print-out for check-in. We don't know we should bring a contract to the hotel! When I returned from the trip, I tried to find the contact on booking.com but I couldn't find anything related to the penalty of 50 CHF.
We tried to communicate with him, but the owner was so rude and uncivilized, he just simply ignored us and walked away. Then we understood there's no use to say anything anymore. No matter what the reason is, he had got the money and just wouldn't give it back to us. It was a robbery.
We waited for 5 minutes and he didn't show up again. There's no one in the reception. We should call the police but since we didn't want to ruin our day so we left.
