Well, you could take the postbus from Brig to Taesch and change for the shuttle train to Zermatt (it's only about 150m from the train station to the bus stop). But I don't see much advantage arriving in Zermatt that late. It might be easier to try to stay the night in Brig (or Visp) and take an early morning train to Zermatt. Plus, if you miss the 1801 connection in Geneva, or if the train is delayed (rare in Switzerland but it still happens), you're stranded in Brig overnight anyway.

When you arrive the next morning, your hotel in Zermatt will probably let you store your bags until your room is ready for check-in, which leaves you free to hike, take the Gornergrat train, or do whatever else you want! Even if your hotel won't store your bags for whatever reason, you should be able to store them at the train station for a small fee.

Enjoy your trip!

I have been to both Brig and Visp. Brig is a lovely little place to stay overnight and most of the hotels I know of are within walking distance of the train station. Try the Hotel Simplon. Nice accomodations. My husband also stays in Visp and is pleased to stay at the Visperhoff.(????spl)
The ride from Brig to Zermatt is over an hour and you will enjoy the scenery if you choose to stay overnight in one of those towns.
Look out for the llamas.

Travel Tips for Zermatt

A winter scene????

by sandysmith

A fond memory was the view of the town on the day we left.
We had a snowfall the day before but now the sun was cracking the flags again and the mountains were resplendent with a fresh coating of snow.....
This was the view from the square near our hotel.

Ricola Herb Garden

by sierralyndon

In the little village of Blatten, a short hike from Zermatt, is a little patch of grass with all the famous herbs used in manufacturing the famous Ricola herb candies. To be honest I actually thought they produced it there, but it turned out to be a cute little garden with some information on Ricola and the benefits of the various herbs used.

No payment required to visit.

No CARS, surely, we ar in Zermatt.

Zermatt is also known for being one of the few places where cars (symbols of 20th century) are absolutely forbidden.

Leave them at the parking some kilometers outside of the town, and use the railway instead.

Bergrestaurant Alphitta

After a 3 hours hike from Sunegga Paradise we arrived at the Riffelalp (2200 m). It is home to the Bergrestaurant Alphitta which is a sort of mountain inn. Opening times are from 09:00 until 17:00 h.

The restaurant has a large outdoor terrace for more than 70 people. On sunny days it is well frequented by hikers and locals. The toilets are accessible from the inside and outside.

They offer genuine local cuisine and a wide range of pasta dishes. A cake buffet is available as well.

I opted for a small mixed salad and an apple spritzer, which was tasty and reasonably priced. The bill was 16 CHF (about 10 Euro, 2007).

Zermatt Cemetery

The Zermatt Cemetery is home to many graves of unlucky mountaineers who died during their attempts to climb the various mountains including the Matterhorn.

The graves are often decorated with mountaineer equipment like pick axes and the headstones state the circumstances of the death.

Among the many famous people who are buried here are also the Swiss mountain guides Peter Taugwalder Senior and Junior who were members of the group of the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn.

The Zermatt Cemetery is situated just inbetween the western bank of the river Vispa and the St. Mauritius Church.
