Trains and Christmas in Zermatt

by harpercollins

My fiance and I are planning a trip skiing then windsurfing for our honeymoon (imagine the packing!). We will need to get from Zermatt to Geneva by train by 10am on 26th Dec: BOXING DAY!!! The SBB timetable isn't published that far ahead as yet but it has been suggested by the Swiss Tourist Board that the timetable will be a Sunday timetable (which currently would get us to the airport in Geneva on time).

Does anyone have any experience of the timetables/making this journey on a public holiday? We would obviously hate to be stranded and appreciate any advice!

Thanks!

Even on a regular workday, you would have to take the 5:39 AM train out of Zermatt to get to Geneva (Airport, I assume?) before 10 AM. Probably best to travel to Geneva on Christmas Day and stay the night somewhere in the Geneva area.

The timetable for next year has in fact allready been published. It gets published half a year in advance in Switzerland, but you have to know where to find it :-) The online timetable on the SBB website will only start showing the train times for next year from the end of october. Those that want to have a peak at the planned changes (not many this year) and understand German can go to www.fahrplanentwurf.ch.
This site tells me that the first train leaving Zermatt in the morning will leave at 5:39, and that this one will get you to Geneva in time. This train runs every day. There is also a train at 6:13, which will get you to the airport at 10:13, which might be to late for you.
However, depending on your airline, you might be able to allready check in at the Zermatt railway station. You can even have them forward your luggage to the airport (and airline) for you, saving you hassle, and allowing you to maybe leave on a later train.

Travel Tips for Zermatt

Interesting entrance

by mvtouring

The entrance to our Hotel was one of the most interesting I have come across. You enter at the side of the mountain, walk down this long passage untill you get to the lift that will take you up to the hotel

Free map and hiking brochure

by HORSCHECK

Zermatt's Tourist Information offers many free helpful brochures. You should definitely pick up the town map of Zermatt which not only has a detailed street index, but also gives rough directions to the surrounding places like Zmutt or Sunnegga paradise.

If you are planning to hike, the free "Adventure in the mountains" brochure is useful as it lists more than 30 suggestions with the main facts and figures for hikes from Zermatt.

The Tourist Information Office of Zermatt is located at the Bahnhofplatz (train station square), just next to the train station.

The rail line climbs thru the forest.

An advantage that the train has over the cable cars, is the fact that to agin elevartion the train meanders around , sometimes the valley is to the right, at times to the left.

Another point worth noting is that there are no cables popping into your photos and at least in some trains the windows slide down, thus eliminating the reflections found on photos taken from a train.

The train does have an overhead wire system so that is something to be aware of.

Glacier Express

by gizmo_girl

Take the famous GLACIER EXPRESS train from Zermatt to Andermatt, then down the Gotthard route to Fluelen and Zürich. The ride is one of the most breathtaking in Switzerland. This is one of the famous Swiss Mountain Railway. A panoramic trip through the Alps in the heart of Switzerland.

Edelweiss

by sandysmith about Cafe Edelweiss

Cafe Edelweis is in an isolated position, perched on a cliff, overloking the Trift valley in Zermatt. An unassuming little place and cosy inside.

Its quite a steep hike up here - and there's no cable-car!!

You can see more of this place in the travelogue of the hike up here. Apple Punch!!
