you have to walk with your skis a lot
There is no real easy way to get your skis and yourself to the train station without walking in your ski boots...keep this in mind or arrange for a cab to pick you up if you have to carry skis for kids.

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Zermatt in Oct. I read that most things are closed in Zermatt from Oct to mid-Nov. Is this true? Are there still things to do in Zermatt during that time? I'm planning to stay 3 nights in Zermatt. Thanks.

there you can find what is still open. For the major attractions it will not be a problem. Most schools have school holidays in October so the season is still going for that. Just if the weather is bad it might already be snowing.

Winter can be really cold and you can expect temperatures low to -10 °C, so plan some warm clothes, a windstopper jacket and confortable shoes that will also keep you warm and dry.
Something you shouldn't forget is some sun protection, you can easily get bourned from the winter sun, for both your lips and face.
Part way up the Gornegrat trail, just near the Riflesee station - a great place to have your pic taken with the Matterhorn in the background - just a shame it was clouded over by then, oh well thats mountain weather for you ;-/ Some day we will be back yet again I think for that perfect reflection of the Matterhorn in the lake near here!
Zermatt has some very nice cable car routes. One of them goes up to the Rothorn Paradise, and another goes all of the way up to the Klein Matterhorn via the Schwarzsee Paradise. Any of the cable car routes in Zermatt would be worth the trip. Similar to the Gornergrat train ticket, the rider can get on and off at intermediate stops in order to explore. I chose to visit Klein Matterhorn (aka. the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise) with a stop at Schwarzsee along the way. These cable cars serve hikers, skiers---even in summer, and those who simply would like to admire the enchanting scenery. The Swiss pass allows a 50% discount on any of these journeys. I find the morning to be the best time to ride as the crowds have yet to appear and the weather can often be at its best.
Café Fuchs describes itself as a restaurant, tea room, and bistro. It seemed more like a café when we had lunch there before catching the funicular up to Sunnegga.
It was a gorgeous day and we found a nice table out on the terrace. Before we sat we had a look inside and decided on some ready made quichy-type things in the display cabinet, which we ordered from the counter staff. Once outside, a harassed looking waitress dashed past, taking our drink order on the way. It didn't take too long for our food to arrive, though I wasn't too excited by it. But then I rarely get excited about quiche.
We waited for an eternity to try get our bill and in the end went inside and joined a long queue to pay. Finally at the front of the queue, they had no record of our order, and we had to repeat what we had eaten/drunk, three times. Boring.
