Youth Hostel: Little Youth Hostel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • For us, there really wasn't a need for any kind of fancy hotel (although there are MANY in Zermatt). We spent all day and even evenings walking around the town or up in the mountains. So our tiny TINY youth hostel room served just fine.

If you picture the valley as a "U", the hostel was kind of up higher on one of the sides, so it offered a great view of the town. Plus, when we woke up and pulled back the window shades, we had a breathtaking view of the sun hitting the Matterhorn. They also had a cafeteria for meals.

try the tourist bureau: A good choice....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • My advice is to contact the tourist bureau and ask for a listing of flats for the time you want (usually it requires a week stay, especially during peak season). There is a good selection, and you can save A LOT on food by making breakfasts and a few dinners. Often you can deal directly with the owners (most of whom speak some english). But don't bother trying to negotiate price unless its the last minute. Also, for risk takers, even at peak season there are often hotel rooms available at the last minute... if you walk in and ask.... but probably not if you call....

    Chalet Medi
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Zermatt is known for its expensive hotels, but if you're a budget traveler like me;), Chalet Medi will suit your needs. It is a private room owned and manage by a very nice landlady. The place is not far from train main station. The room is clean and the (shared) bathroom is newly renovated. I'll definitely stay here again.

Hotel Primavera: One of the best....   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:

  • This hotel was not far from the station. It appears as a chalet with nice balconies, a good restaurant, and a nice garden area. The staff is very friendly, and were very accomodating. I found the breakfast to be nice with good choices, and the free use of internet was helpful to send messages back home. The views of the Matterhorn are excellent. It is on the far side of the river from the train station, so the mountain is not obstructed by the ridge in front of it. Some of my favorite photos of the mountain are from the balcony of the room. Everything is withing easy walking distance as Zermatt is not too large. I highly recommend the Primavera. It is a good value for this region.

Some of the best moments of this trip was simply sitting on the balcony and looking at the views.

Le Petit: Le Petit Rooftop Terrace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The hotel had a rooftop terrace - great suntrap and you could orientate yourself with the mountains and gondola stations.
It also made for a fun snowball fight when we had the snow...and the view of the snowy trees and roofs of Zermatt was quite picturesque.

  • Tip Rating:
  • With over 130 hotels in the village of Zermatt, you will find accommodation ranging from the expensive and elegant to thrifty yet cosy. From five star luxury to quaint bed and breakfast, there is a hotel in Zermatt which will meet every traveler's expectation. I never miss an opportunity to visit Zermatt when I'm in Switzerland.

Be sure to book your accommodation well ahead of your intended stay in Zermatt because the 7,000 beds fill up quickly... especially during the winter high season.

The Gornergrat Kulm hotel is a two star Hotel, but it's BIG and is extremly comfortable! The two-star hotel has 21 rooms with a total of 43 beds. There are shared showers and toilets, which was a concern at first, but the showers and toilets were by far the nicest and cleanest we found on our trip. The simple, clean furnishings are complemented by good service. The rooms facing west provide a magnificent view of the Matterhorn, which was our inspiration for our reservation, while the rooms with an eastern exposure offer you the alpine sunrise in bed. Unfortunately for us, heavy snow fall and hurricane force winds that night and the next morning prevented us from seeing anything, but like with most things, the unexpected makes for the most unforgetable moments.

    Gandegg-Hütte: Gandegg-Hütte
  • Tip Rating:
  • We slept in a 25 person wide bed.
The toilet was outside build on a fissure, so looking down you would see s... (you know) flying down.
We had an overnight thunderstorm which really is impressive with all the mountain echo's (also the toilet was blown away!).
