1. of August
by iammon
The 1. of August is Swiss National Day. There are celebrations all over the country. Therefore as well in Zermatt. You will get to see lots of people dressed in traditional folklore cloths. Normally there is a big firework show(if it is not too dry and fire danger alert). Check at the tourist information for exact programme of the day. Sometimes they serve free Valais wine during the fireworks show and you will hear Swiss traditional music. I think it is quite an interesting day for tourist. Swiss people have the day off and it might be crowded everywhere on that day.
Zum See
by sandysmith
On a short afternoon stroll we took the cable-car the short distance form Zermatt - Furi (cos we're lazy) and walked to the tiny hamlet of Zum See. Just a handful of barns and a tiny restaurant and loads of Geraniums!

by Pakistaniguy
The only way to come to ZERMATT is by Train and you have to catch a specific train from a near by town of TÄSCH. The train runs regularly every 20 mins. It takes 15 mins to reach Zermatt by this train.
Cakes and Cafe Crawls
by sandysmith about Hornli
When it rains in Zermatt it rains for the day...or it snows! So once you've done the Alpine Museum and all those shops its time for a cafe crawl.
This one the Hornli was quite cosy.....you could select a cake from the shop and have it brought upstairs to the cafe part. Take a window seat up here and enjoy being in the warmth, watching the people pass below.
The Church
by sswagner
In the center of town is the main church. It has some unusual ceiling paintings on the inside. The exterior is noted with having a small cemetery with the graves of mountain climbers who perished in an attempt to scale one of the high peaks in this region. The dates all vary, although some go back to when climbing was very much a pioneering sport. The climbers graves are sometimes marked with equipment and usually have the name of the mountain inscribed on the memorial.
