Road from Brig to Tasch and Simplon Pass

by rocky12345

Hi Everyone - can anyone tell me what the road from Brig to Tasch is like for driving a car? Is it sealed, two way, steep, scary etc.
I am a nervous driver - would I be better to leave my car at Brig and train from there?
Also I am planning to go to Italy afterwards via the Simplon Pass - what is that road like to drive?
Thanks in advance

Both routes are good for driving, they're in excellent condition. Two directional roads but no overtaking on the biggest part of this section. Swiss drivers are very okay. In bad weather choose Simplon tunnel.

The Simplon tunnel car transfer on rail does not operate very frequent... but it is true, in bad weather the Simplon pass, despite very good road is no fun to drive. As to Zermatt, leave your car in Visp and take the train to Zermatt. The parking in Visp is much cheaper than in Täsch.

Travel Tips for Zermatt

Goats Promenade

by sue_stone

Whilst walking along the main street of Zermatt I kept noticing that the road was covered in what looked like patches of horse manure. Anyway, I kept dodging them and didn't think much more about it until I noticed a poster in our hotel advertising the "La Promenade des Chevres" - the goats tour.

Basically, each morning (around 9am) and each afternoon (around 5pm), a herd of goats are paraded along the main street. How could we miss out on that!

One morning, at about 8.45am, we headed just up the road from our hotel to the church square and got into position. Just a few minutes later the goats appeared, being herded by a group of kids.

I am partial to goats and these were beauties - long haired, with their front half black and their back half white, and with lovely long horns. So we snapped a few photos as they passed, and then dodged the poo on the way back to the hotel.

In 2008, the 'goats tour' took place each day between the 21st of June until the 16th of August.

Gorner Schlucht

Gornerschlucht is an extraordinary natural canyon. It is very unconventional and exciting.
There is a small path; parts are on ground, some are made out of wood including a bridge and stairs. Several turnings make it varied.

How to get to Zermatt

by Fam_Stoica

You can reach Zermatt by train (the Swiss railway network is the best in the world) or by plane (the village has its own heliport, operated by Air Zermatt). The access for private car transport is only allowed as far as Täsch (5km from Zermatt). The road from Täsch to Zermatt is not open to public transport.

One of the finest grill room in the village

by Tripack about Restaurant Rôtisserie Spycher

In a cosy athmosphere you could delight your eyes within this rustic setting and your palate with the tasteful meal and wine.
You can "supervise" the meticulious preparation of you meat and watch the flambée show before enjoying your meal.

Restaurant Spycher is member of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs : so no surprise permitted about the excellent quality of service and meal.

The owner is also an excellent alpenhorn player . Choose your favourite meat with an exceptionnal local wine (as usual ;-).

The Matterhorn is probably the most famous mountain in the European Alps. It's on the border between Switzerland and Italy and towers over Zermatt.

The graceful pyramid towers and the long sloping back give the Matterhorn an impression of the Sphinx.

The Matterhorn has four steep faces with regular avalanches that send the snow down to the base of each face.
