Hike: Riffelalp to Zermatt (Winkelmatten)
by HORSCHECK
After our hike from Sunnegga paradise to Riffelalp (2200 m) we had two options to get back to Zermatt (1620 m).
Either take the Gornergrat railway or follow the Arvenweg (Swiss stone pine trail).
As the weather was fine and we were still in good shape we decided to follow the Arvenweg downwards.
The trail starts opposite to the Riffelalp station and leads in steep serpentines through a pine and larch forest downwards to Winkelmatten which is a district of Zermatt.
The trail is about 4,5 km long and the difference in altitude is more than 600 m. It took us 2 h to get to Zermatt as walking downwards on such a steep trail can be pretty exhausting.
The way is well signposted and has good vantage points for panoramic views of Zermatt.
Ski the Alps
by Skigirl
Snow skiing in Zermatt is well worth the trip to the top. The runs are all day long adventures skiing down the alps and stopping at the many alpine chalet restaurants along the way. The scenery is beautiful and the snow abundant. Dress warm because when the sun is not out a cold chill catches up with you.
Moosjesee
by sandysmith
The Moosjesee (2140m) completes the 5 lakes - Stellisee, Grunsee, Grindjsee and Leisee being the others. Again this was a bit of a detour below our target of Findeln so just another shot from up above it. It looked more like a man-made dam lake to me and judging by the turquoise colour of the water would not be reflecting either :-S. So the Stellisee or the Grindjsee are best options for the scenic views and good spots for an alpine picnic on the 5 lakes walk.

You can't miss it on a sunny day

You can go up closer by gondola or train. Both are a unique experience. Restaurants can be found traveling by both. The gondola is the skiers means of going anytime of the year. If you decide to take the gondola there are changes about three times. At the end of this ride is the ice cave.
