Firstly, which airport in Milan are you flying into: Malpensa or Linate? You should count on about an hour in both cases to get to Milano Centrale railway station by shuttle bus. From Malpensa you can also go by Malpensa Express train in 40 minutes but this is to the Codornu railway station.
For transport see http://www.milanostyle.com/php/article.php?id_art=64
Re sleeping at airport, see http://www.sleepinginairports.net/europe/milan.htm

Travel Tips for Zermatt

Matterhorn from the trail

by herzog63

The monolith of the Matterhorn is visible from just about everywhere in the area! I don't remember how tall it is but it sure is beautiful!! Sorry for the quality of my 20 year-old photos but that's all I have!!

Skiing/Snowboarding around The Matterhorn

by Tripack

Summer skiing is possible thanks the glacier located at the Klein Matterhorn area. Go skiing the morning to have the best snow conditions.

Winter skiing has several places around Zermatt all interconnected (except Klein Matterhorn -> Sunnega, you should take the bus).

***Sunegga-Rothorn area
Easily reachable by a alpine metro. Here you get the best view for The Matterhorn.

***Gornergrat - Stockhorn area
Stockhorn & Hohtalli area is for experimented skiers and a paradise for free riders. Gornergrat area have plenty of snow boulevards and easy slopes for beginners, you could also take the famous Gornegrat train with your ski pass.

***Klein Matterhorn - Schwarzsee area
You could reach the summit of The Klein Matterhorn (3'820m) by a vertiginous cable car. Be prudent at the summit you could feel a little dizzy due to the altitude or the overnight party (for me;). Schwarzsee and Trockener steg area is nice for carving session. You could also ski to Cervinia (Italy) by the Theodulpass.

One day Swiss ski pass 2005 are CHF 66 for adult, CHF 56 for youth/senior and CHF 33 for children. But you could buy cheaper pass for a longer stay.
TIP: Special Family on Zermatt skiing area, the kids under 9 y.o. get a free ski pass.

Have a great snow/ski/surf fun there!!!

A land of Ice and Snow, but melting fast.

I have to keep checking the photos of mountains and glaciers against the Aerial Map of Zermatt and the surrounding mountains.

There is a difference between the Artists view of the range of mountains and the photos, mainly because the position of my camera is not necessarily the same as the view point of the artist. There is also a matter of artistic license, they say the camera cannot lie.

A cable car to Z Mutt?

by dabidc

As I hiked valiently up to Z Mutt, the cable car seemd to glide past quietly laughing at the efforts of the human trying to reach the same destination.

Well it is transport but not on any scheduled passenger trip.

Red Hot Spiced Wine

by Roadquill

After a day of skiing, stopping at the local bar is a necessity and sipping on a red hot spiced wine is a great way to relax and enjoy the company of friends. After I had my first at this bar just outside the lifts at Zermatt, I made some for my family, brother and sis in law in Mammoth Lakes after a day of skiing. It was a hit.
