We will be arriving in Zermatt early in October,(2 couples), and am wondering if there is competition between hotels/ apartments at the rail station to have you stay. I remember arriving there in January 1984, and found representatives of various places at the station offering well priced accommodation. Is this still the case, or have things altered in the last 25 years? :)

I never saw something like that in any station in Europe in the last 15 years, maybe its forbidden now, maybe it simply doesnt make sense anymore since most people are booking over the internet in advance.
AND especially for Zermatt that makes sense also for you, and the sooner you book, the better will be the offer, because Oct is some sort of "end of the season" and there is certainly some competion to get guests on the internet!

Travel Tips for Zermatt

by sue_stone

A marmot is a furry rodent that you may be lucky to spot whilst exploring the mountains around Zermatt. Wikipedia describes a marmot as a "large ground squirrel", and I thought they looked like a cross between a beaver and a groundhog. Marmots usually live in burrows, and hibernate during the winter months.

One good place to try some marmot spotting is at Sunnegga Paradise, where they have a 'Marmot observation post'. When we visited we were lucky to see one of these cute fellows sitting on a rock in the sun, munching on his lunch - some sort of green vegetation.

For more information on marmots you can take a 5 minute cable car ride from Sunnegga Paradise to Blauherd. Once there you can then follow the 'Marmot Trail' back to Sunnegga and learn about the marmot and its habits along the way. Our best marmot spotting was when we were on the cogwheel train to Gornergrat, and we were lucky to see a few of these critters enjoying the sunny day in the meadows.

Japanese twin cities

Zermatt is very popular with tourists from Japan, therefore Zermatt is twinned with two Japanese towns.

Since the 30th September 1994 Zermatt has had a friendship with Myoko Kogen, which merged with Arai and Myoko City to become Myoko City in 2005. It is home to the active volcano Mount Myoko (2454 m).

Zermatt's second Japanese twin town is Kyoto. The friendship was established in summer 2004.

Bronze relief tablets of the two friendships can be found in the the so called "Myoko Corner" which is located just next to the St. Mauritius Church.

Zum See Barns

by sandysmith

These are some of the quaint old barns at Zum See - tourism has not changed these to holiday chalets......yet. Lets hope this place retains its charm and peacefulness as the centre of Zermatt becomes more and more touristic.

We took an Elektrotaxi on our way back from Matterhorn Glacier Paradise station to the train station. It was the last pull and there were many passengers waiting at the valley, so a taxi with a capacity of six persons is quite a comfy ride. The fare is 3.00 CHF per person.

Different way of doing things.....

by Maryimelda about Chez Gaby.....

This seems to be a typical Swiss Restaurant until you get inside and find that there is no kitchen as such. the meals are all cooked in a tiny corner of the main restaurant. Likewise, the dishes are washed in another corner which also serves as the bar and cash desk.
The restaurant seats about 100 people inside and out and by the time I left it was packed to the rafters. There were 3 chefs and 4 waitresses on duty and they carried it off with a minimum of fuss. It was really quite amazing. I lashed out on a Sirloin Steak with creamy mustard sauce, wilted spinach french fries and salad for 32CHF. this was definitely my best dining experience in Zermatt. I highly recommend it.
