Matterhorn - which is better to go, Klein Matterhorn or Gonergrat or Rothorn?

by crazy4ocean

Hello,

I only have one day for sightseeing the famous Matterhorn. No plan for ski, etc. any sports activities. Just simple sightseeing.

I heard there are 4 options for the sightseeing: Klein Matterhorn, Gonergrat, Schwarzsee, and Rothorn. With the time restrains, if I can only go with one option, which would you recommend and the reason?

Is it worth to rush everything and squeeze in 2? if so, what's the 2nd I should go?

Thank you.

forgot to mention, I'll be there end of this December. So the time with daylight is short...

I loved the gornergrat.superb view and so much open space unlike other mountain tops which have fencings. In my opinion,it would be good if you just saw one mountain top and then take time to see the towns nearby.there are beautiful villages like st.nikolas, saasfee, stalden etc. nearby.so you dont feel rushed at the same time get to see enough.
hope this helps,
vpas

Gornergrat is marvelous if - IF - the weather is clear. On an overcast day visibility is likely to be zero, so it won't be worth going up anywhere. The weather cannot be planned. Your plan is risky, limiting yourself to one particular day. I always recommend keeping plans in the alps as flexible as possible. I wish you good luck about the weather.

If you only have one day, then you only have one day. Lets cross our fingers for you.

I would also recommend Gornergrat. My reasons are that it is the easiest to get to from the train station. It is a train, so less likely to be stopped for bad weather.
The other options all involve cablecars. If you suffer any nerves of heights, then the train is the best option. It is also rather special to travel by cog railway up a mountain.

Enjoy your day in Zermatt.

Clothes for all weather required....

Stout shoes/hiking boots are a good idea in such a beautiful hiking area....plus you need to escape the crowds in the town. And don't forget an umbrella and water proofs. When it rains...it rains ...and then it snows!

The Matterhorn at your foot...

by Tripack

If you're in a hurry take an helicopter flight around the Matterhorn with Air Zermatt.

I must admit that it is not the most silencious and ecological way to discover the Matterhorn, so if you have enough time enjoy it on foot or cable-car...

Example: Zermatt Heliport - Matterhorn- Roundflight
Duration: 20 Min
Min. 4 passengers (single passager in combination with other passengers is possible)

Price: CHF 210.- per passenger

Other flights available see the website for more information.

Trains to Zermatt

There are direct train connections in Brig and Visp to the modern narrow-gauge BVZ Zermatt railway, which arrives in Zermatt after a 90-minute journey through the romantic, rugged Vispa Valley.
Two world-famous scenic trains begin or end their journey in Zermatt:
The Glacier-Express (St. Moritz/Davos - Zermatt)
The Rhone Express (Geneve - Montreux - Zermatt)

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

by realde14

You can take the Matterhorn Express Gondola in order to reach one of the highest viewpoints in Europe. There is a (slowly disappearing) glacier that you can visit, and there is snow all year round if you want to go skiing or boarding
