First time in June

by jusme

Would like to know what the weather and Temperature will be like in early June

RE: First time in June

by julin

We were there in late June last year and it was very pleasant in town.Of course it is very much colder on the mountains minus temperatures and sometimes windy.
What date are you going to be there? We arrive in Zermatt on 12th June after travelling from St Moritz by Glacier Express.
Warning-my handbag was stolen at Visp railway station last year. The Swiss are very honest people but of course there are lots of tourists who may not be so beware.Have a great time.Zermatt is lovely which is why we are going again this year.We are staying at BW Alpen Resort.

Luckily ive been to Zermatt a few times, one of the visits in June with some friends and we had the most stunning clear day with blue skies over Zermatt, it had been pretty cold out the night before when we arrived so its always handy to travel with something warm. but during the day lovely.
It really is luck of the draw with Zermatt, other relatives of mine had been there twice and both times couldnt see the mtn for the clouds and rain whereas ive been blessed with great weather it each time. ie for skiing in Feb and March and nice weather when there in November.

Travel Tips for Zermatt

Sunsets fast in the mountains

by herzog63

On one of my longer hikes the sun set very fast and I wasn't prepared for it! At this point I'm about half way on the trail back to town and the sun is setting as it was late afternoon. My last 1½ hours of the hike were done in the night without any flashlight or moonlight to see by! You can see in the picture it is already getting darker in town as the sun goes behind the mountains.

La Patrouille des Glaciers

by Tripack

This alpine challenge is hold each two years, the next The Patrol of the Glaciers (the 12nd) will be the 27-30 April 2006.

The Patrol of the Glaciers is an exceptional race during which it is a question, in a stage, of rejoining Zermatt to Verbier. This single test is characterized by its length, its raised average altitude and the profile of its route. To want to take part in it requires not only a real experiment of the high mountain as well as the control of the extreme conditions which one can face there, but also a specific and meticulous preparation moral and physical. The competitor is committed satisfying the following criteria of competence: to regularly practise excursions and races in mountain being very good skier knowledge to ski "encordé", to be well involved to be able under normal conditions to carry out the sections: Zermatt-Schöbiel in 3h15 Zermatt-Arolla in 7h15 Arolla-Riedmatten in 2h Arolla-Verbier in 8h30 This test disputes by civil or military patrols of three competitors. It is opened with male, female or mixed teams.

Zermatt Barns

by sandysmith

Walking down into Zermatt gives you the chance to explore the back streets where you''ll find charming old barns -the mazots on - have much more rustic appeal than the modern hotel which throng the main streets of Zermatt.

Cable car story (2nd part)

by Tripack

Qualitative growth (since 1979)

The year 1979 marked a turning. By adopting a strict tourist concept, the Confederation put order in the exploitation of the Alps. The high mountain had, as an invaluable landscape, being spared and protected better. The last winter sports resorts of Switzerland were created in Samnaun (1979), Saas Grund (1979) and Évolène (1981). At the same time was born the highest cable car (station at 3820 meters above the sea level): the Klein Matterhorn (Zermatt 1979). Since any other ski lifts was not built in still virgin alpine areas. The phase of fast expansion was over. But the ski lifts industry was not going to fall asleep for as much, since a phase began for an internal development of the existing ski areas to a more qualitative growth. The installations gain there in comfort, effectiveness and safety.

Tendencies (present and to come)

Nowadays many innovations thanks to technical progress are possible.

- 1980 Zermatt obtains the first underground funicular to Sunegga.
- 1992 Rotair, first revolving cable car in the world, enters in service in Titlis.
- 1995 in Samnaun it is the first cable car on two floors which is inaugurated. :
- 2000 in Verbier, the Funitel , a fusion between a funicular and a cable car with cabins, with cable without end, able to convey 3000 people per hour.

And more will come to enjoy our future alpine rides…

Go up a mountain

by piedleger

Take lifts up to the top of the Klein Matterhorn. The view is fantastic. I was there at the beginning of September and they were skying up at the top. Go up to the last level of the lifts, it's worth it and climb up the stairs when you get off the last lift.
I don't remember at what stop it is but make sure you go into the ice tunnel.
