by Tripack
Finally they did it! From December 2006, an useful direct link is available between the Matterhorn and Gornergrat skiing areas thanks to the brand new Riffelberg Express.
This new 8-seat cable car connects Furi and Riffelberg via the intermediate station Schweigmatten, which offer by the way a very convenient access to Furi if you arrive from Gornergrat downhill as before you had to walk a while before taking the lift up to Furi. Up to Riffelberg, you will have the choice among to the 6-seat chair lift Gifthittli or the cogwheel Gornergrat train. No queue in prospect as its capacity is 2400 passengers per hour.
Great and efficient!

Always a great stop to get a (very) fresh drink ;-)
The Igloo Bar Zermatt is located right next to the Igloo Village, which is situated on the ski piste from Gornergrat to Riffelberg at Rotenboden. This snow temple, ornamented with artistic sculptures, offers unforgettable pit stops with a wide selection of cold and hot beverages as well as original Swiss cheese foundue.
Edelweiss trail

A nice hike is the Gletschergartenweg from Riffelberg (Take the Gornergratbahn). Follow the signs Geltschergarten (Dossen/Furi/Moos). It is a great walk if you like to see wild Edelweiss (they are protected so do not pick them!). You will also see Glacial mills and bowls and have some nice views of Matterhorn. You will also have the chance to walk through the gorge down to Zermatt.
The walk will take about 4 hours. It's 600 height meters and its best done from June to October.
Gornergrat

Another fab way to explore the alpine world surrounding Zermatt is a visit to Gornergrat, which is located 3089 metres above sea level. The journey from Zermatt to/from Gornergrat is via cogwheel or rack railway. This special railway was built in 1898, and not only was it the first electric railway in Switzerland, but today it is the highest cogwheel railway in Europe.
Departing from the centre of Zermatt, near the train station, the journey to the top takes 40 minutes, with a few stops along the way. Your train ticket allows you to get on and off along the way so you can explore. The two main stops along the way are Riffelalp and Riffelberg. At 2582 metres, Riffelberg is above the tree line, while Riffelalp is lower at 2211 metres and a good place for alpine meadow views.
Arriving at Gornergrat you will enjoy the gorgeous panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, and a large glacier, from the sunny viewing platform. You can even stay up here, at the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps, or just go for a shop at the hotel's shopping mall. Or have a meal/snack at the restaurant and lap up the views from the sun terrace.
On the way back down from Gornergrat we stopped at Riffelalp to have a look around, and enjoy some lunch at a restaurant with great views across the valley.
