Getting to Zermatt

by drstevechan

Greetings everyone! I'm planning to travel to Zermatt this January and need some help. This is going to be my first time in Europe.

Best/cheapest way to get to Zermatt from Geneva (I'm originating from Naples Italy and planning to fly to Geneva. Any better suggestions?)
Cheap accomodations and hostels in the area

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

From Geneva Airport, your best bet is probably to take the train, since Zermatt is car-free. Hourly trains leave directly from Geneva Airport in the direction of Brig. Change in Visp for the private BVZ Train to Zermatt. Check out www.sbb.ch for schedule details.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip!

Are you travelling with someone else? Aren't u spending few days in switzerland? Then, swiss pass will be the best option.we went in christmas vacation. It is relly money saving. But two things to keep in mind. Buy it(from any railway stn)if travelling as a group of two to four/more. It includes everythying(excluding fetured rides:such as jungfraubahn, golden pass or cablecar. Butwhile buying tickets for jungfrubahn you will get 50% discount for the swiss pass )secondly, while buying swiss passs always keep the passport with you. The pass is not for the swiss residents. so you may have to show it to prove your identity. From Geneva take train for brig.some of them stops at visp(just the previous stn.)From Brig change for smaller trains going to zermatt. The stn is just outsuide the main Brig stn.During return journey all trains stop at visp and you have to change there for Geneva.sbb.ch is great.U can get every esstential details of your journey from their timetable. In case of any confusion information centres help a lot.So always try for that on your way.
Have a great holiday.

Travel Tips for Zermatt

Alpine flora and fauna

The Alp regions offer a wide range of wildlife and native flora. On our hikes we saw quite a few interesting animals, flowers and plants.

Among the animals was the "Valais Blackneck Goat" which is mainly located in the Canton of Valais.

It is usually long haired and has a typical black forequarter and white hindquarter.

Besides many other colourful flowers, we saw several "Silver thistles" (Carlina acaulis). It is a proteced alpine plant which can be found in regions of central and southern Europe.

Golf at the summit

by Tripack

Recently open in summer 2004, this parkland alpine golf of 9 holes (Par 36, 2.9 km long) has been designed by the golf specialist architect John Chilver-Stainer on a 21 hectares playground in respect with the nature.

Its location is between Randa and Tasch at 1’400m along the both side of the local river Vispa. Driving range, putting green, restaurant, changing rooms and showers are available on site.

Glacier Gorge

by sandysmith

At the far end of Zermatt not far from Furi you can enter the glacier gorge for a small fee - much like the one at Grindelwald. A series of boards around this ravine will enable you to see the rushing water cascading down from the glaciers safely.

Great food at great prices

by sierralyndon about Grampi's

We walked up and down the main road of Zermatt looking for a good grill. It didn't appear to be very popular, or else was only served at the swankiest hotels. But we finally found it when we came to Grampi's, which is a pub/bar downstairs and a restaurant upstairs.

We had very good grilled ribs and Buffalo chicken wings. Grilled spare ribs and buffalo chicken wings

Klein Matterhorn summit -video tour

by StuartDutchman

Enjoy spectacular panoramic views from the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the highest mountain station of the Alps. It is situated on the summit of Klein Matterhorn.

The peak is at 3883m with the cable car terminal at 3820m, the highest cable car end point in Europe.

It is the highest point in the Zermatt ski area, where you can ski even during summer time.

On the highest panoramaplatform of Europe you get an all around panorama from the swiss alps, including a close view of the Matterhorn.
