The weather
by eurotravels
It’s worth noting that the Matterhorn clouds over pretty quickly. It seemed crystal clear when we set off on our trip but within an hour or so little of it was visible even though we had great views of the surrounding mountains. We got some nice shots from the Monte Rosa aspect of the Matterhorn. You will need to take walking boots and pick a totally clear and still day. Allow plenty of time.
Change in altitude
by Dabs
If you are heading up to Gornergrat or any place else with higher altitude, make sure you dress warm enough even in summer. I was fine, in August, with a fleece pullover and a light windbreaker. Hiking boots with treads are a good idea if you are doing any hiking or even if you're not in event the pavement is slick. Sunglasses and a hat might be useful as well. Several people mentioned sunscreen but so little of me was exposed that I didn't feel I needed it. But if you are hiking and plan on spending several hours outside, it's a good idea as you burn easier at higher altitudes.
Mountain view

See the Gletschers and the Mountains south of Zermatt. We took the Gornergratbahn to the Monta Rosa. The next day we explored the Gorner Gletscher and had a wonderful view at the BREITHORN mountains.
The Gornergrat cog Railway system
by dabidc
I have used trains all my life, far longer than cars or any other form of transport.
So there is an attraction for me towards this means of travel.
I have been transported to many mountain heights by cable car and chair lift, they have their place. On this final day in Zermatt the train to Gornergrat won out over the Cable car to either Schwarzsee or Klein Matterhorn or both locations.
The prices are competitive, special rates are in effect for both systems of ascent.
The schedules are also comprehensive.
It also comes down to several questions.
Is the means of ascent convenient to where you you are staying in Zermatt?
Do you want to be close to the Matterhorn?
Do you want to visit the Ice Grotto at Klein Matterhorn?
Do you prefer to see the Matterhorn from a distance?
Will your camera give you close ups to satisfy your wishes or needs?
Are the stops / stations of value to you for hiking, taking photos or seeing some other views?
However you have to decide which is better for you
For me the Gornergrat train was the desired means of transport on this occasion.
Self service buffet or Pizzeria in altitude...
by Tripack about ICE
The Restaurant Trockener Steg, reconstructed at a cost of CHF 12 million, reopened on for winter 2009/10 under the new name of Ice – Buffet/Bar/Pizzeria.
This restaurant is situated at an altitude of 2'939m /9'640 feet close to the Matterhorn. The building stands at the foot of the Theodul Glacier, which lies between the Matterhorn and the Klein Matterhorn.
The self-service ICE BUffet restaurant has seating for 400 guests inside and a further 400 on the sun-terrace.
My favorite experience is on 2nd floor where you could find the pizzeria ICE. Head to the terrace to enjoy delicious pizza made thanks a wood fire oven. By the my fav. piz' is the Biagio with Tomato sauce, mozzarella, oregano, fresh tomatos, rocket, parmesan, parma ham or try a copious pasta meal... Enjoy your meal and the view!
