November weather
by mdlaura
We're planning a side trip to (Possibly )Zermatt in Mid November(After seeing Paris) We wouldn't be planning to ski, but I'd like an idea of how cold it gets it town, if there is still the option of doing any hikes/walks, or just sightseeing up the Matterhorn...I hear the village is beautiful!
Re: November weather
by freethinker
We we nt there in the last december and it was quite cold...temp. from -2 to +2 or 3.But all depend upon the weather and sunshine....we felt much more cold at the town than in the peak as therewere lots of sunshine in the peaks and the towns were foggy at the morning. In Dec. therer were snows all around ...in the village gardens too.And really it's a nice, pretty one

The Matterhorn in chocolate?
by Tripack
The Matterhorn is the emblem of Zermatt and its shape could have inspired our Swiss chocolate master for the creation of the Toblerone.
Although different versions exist of where the unique shape of Toblerone originated from, I find this one the more tatsy ;-)

Many amenities at the top station, Gornergrat
by dabidc
The station at Gornergrat, in spite of being surrounded by construction to make the area more attractive and also to spruce up the hotel, offers a wide terrace to view the mountains and glaciers to the south.
One advantage in getting to the top early on a sunny day, is the fact that direct sun is not shining on the camera lens and presenting some not so good photos, especially looking south. There is a restaurant andshop and snack bar and terrace for dining outside the resaurant. Then a bridge over the tracks will take you up past the hotel to another open area, higher than the first.
Extensive views are possible all around the summit.
I will place many more photos in the travelogue section, some of views from and at this top station. It is also possible to have your photo taken for a fee, with one or two St Bernard Dogs.
Cable car story (1st part)
by Tripack
Swiss Cable Car story...
Discover the alpine world was formerly the privilege of the warriors, the tradesmen and the wealthy people. Thanks to the technical development, for a few decades, the mountain has been accessible to everyone. The first installations of transport to cables were built at the end of the 19th century. From this beginning to the funitels, the development of the technique of the ski lifts is a part of the Swiss tourism history.
Pionner period (1866-1915)
The first cable car was built in 1866 on the Falls of the Rhine close to Schaffhausen. The drive of the installation built by Johann Jakob Rieter was done... with a crank.
The first funicular of Switzerland connected Lausanne to Ouchy in 1877.
In 1900, the Swiss territory counted already 26 installations (cable cars or funiculars). An act pioneer was the construction in 1908 of Wetterhorn cable car close to Grindelwald - the first cable car of the world to transport people.
Stagnation (1915-1945)
Alpine tourism had been launched at the 19th century by English who came in Switzerland to go skiing and to enjoy mountain’s excursions. The 1928 Winter Olympics in Saint-Moritz gave a popular rush for the winter sports and consequently to the ski lifts development. But soon the economic crisis and the Second World War delayed this rise.
Boom and euphoria (1945-1979)
The post-war economic period knew a boom for the ski lifts manufacturers supported the fast expansion of the winter sports. So in the Fifties and Sixties a considerable number of spaces favourable for the winter sports were available. The ski became a popular sport. Between 1955 and 1975 two thirds of the winter sports resorts of the Swiss mountains were open.

Matterhorn
by NateWill22
The Matterhorn is definitely the center-piece of Zermatt. It is so breathtaking, you must see it sometime. My most memorable moment was taking the Glacier Express from Brig to Zermatt, and going around these large cliffs and mountains, and finally getting my first peek at the Matterhorn over the other mountain tops. It was so exciting.
