visiting matterhorn & gornegrat in 1 day?

by delacruz_maybelyn

Hi guys! My husband and I will be arriving in Zermatt at around 3:30pm on July 18. Ive read a lot of good things about matterhorn & gornegrat. Is it possible to visit the 2 peaks in 1 day? Also, what time is the last schedule of the train that goes up to either matterhorn or gornegrat? I'm thinking of getting a night train from Paris on the evening of July 17. If im lucky enough to get a ticket for that,i will be arriving in geneva at around 12noon and Im thinking of doine either peaks as soon as ive settled in the hotel. Hope to hear from you guys. Would greatly appreciate any input. =)

Maybel, why are you in such a hurry? Mountains have to be enjoyed peacefully, it is a pleaseure not only to watch the scenery, but also to listen to the nature, the silenece, something city folks do no longer know of.
In any case, there are no longer any night trains between Paris and Geneva, all trains are the fast TGV type (takes 3.5 hours).
for train tiemtables (TGV and all Swiss domestic train, bus, boat etc services).
Your dates will be very busy with the beginning of French summer holidays: so better book the TGV trains early (no need to book Swiss trains, as all trains run frequently)
Bon voyage,

Travel Tips for Zermatt

by Kate-Me

Gornergrat is further up the mountain quite some way from Zermatt, and is the last stopping point for the train. There's just one more stop before you are at the very top of the Matterhorn, but that has to be taken by cablecar, and being afraid of heights, I was more than happy to linger at Gornergrat a while and enjoy walking around on the snow (only my 3rd ever time in the snow, and the other twice in Australia weren't huge falls or huge mountains) One of my fondest Swiss memories - playing in the snow up at Gornergrat, and wearing short sleeved t-shirts! I had never imagined how this could be possible and the snow not melt until this point.

Pack for the high peaks

Wheels on bags are preferable, although most hotels will pick you up at the train station if you call them. Wool and synthetics are ideal. Cotton will be useless if it is cold and you get wet. Sunblock is essential as is eye protection and a hat. Gloves and windproof/waterproof outer gear are most desirable since the weather can change at any time, especially at the high elevations. Aspirin might be desirable due to the high altitude. Some people have difficulty adjusting, and headaches can occur. Absolutely bring a camera. Trekking poles or a walking stick will help. If riding the Gornergrat train or one of the cable cars, bring a map showing the route so you can know your options along the way.

Your first 4000m peak...

The Breithorn climbing for everyone...

The Breithorn (4'164m) is the easiest four-thousand-metre peak in the area. Its snow-capped peak is rather flat and is thus easier to handle than most other mountains. A guide helps one get to the top in about two hours and the descent about 1 1/2 hours.

On the top, the view is absolutely breath-taking, you will feel dominating all alpine peaks surroundings as the Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Dent Blanche, Obergabelhorn, Zinal Rothorn, Weisshorn, Mischabel and of course the Breithorn itself...

You take the cable-car from Zermatt to the Klein Matterhorn and the tour starts at the mountain station of the Matterhorn glacier paradise (3'883m). Please note that one needs to be in good shape.

Reservations at the "Alpin Center" located in the middle of the Bahnhofstasse.

There are three ways of getting around Zermatt :

(1) Small electric powered taxis/carts
(2) Horse drawn taxis/ sleighs
and (3) WALK

You will do a lot of walking in Zermatt .It is good for you .

Trockener Steg Self-Service Restaurant

by sue_stone about Trockener Steg Restaurant

After an amazing visit to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise we needed a nice cup of tea to defrost (as it was -5 celsius up there), so we headed down one cable car stop to Trockener Steg where we had spotted a restaurant on the way up. We just went to the 'self-service' part and helped ourselves to hot drinks and some tasty cake. We then found a sunny table on the terrace, put our feet up and drank in the views of the Matterhorn.

We could have sat there for hours, looking at the surrounding peaks and glaciers. One of the most scenic places I've ever had a cuppa!
