A lovely and cheap ** hotel
by Fam_Stoica about Hotel Testa Grigia
Testa Grigia is a lovely hotel, well-situated (on the main street, in the heart of the village), cheap (taking into account the usual rates in Switzerland) and providing a charming atmosphere. All the receptionists are poliglots. Excellent position, TV, minibar, phone, recent renovated rooms, buffet breakfast.
Cervinia (Italy)

Curious to see the hidden face of The Matterhorn? So go skiing to the other side...
The Matterhorn skiing (Swiss side) area is connected to Breuil-Cervinia / Valtournenche and Val d'Aoste (Italian side). Once on the Theodul Glacier (Matterhorn glacier paradise), head over the Theodulpass (3'300m) or the Testa Grigia to experiment large slopes down to Breuil Cervinia (2'050m). Efficient chairlifts or cable car will take you back to Zermatt quite quickly. If you choose the to access to Cervinia skiing area via Testa Grigia, it is the best option to reach Valtournenche by a 13km descent and more than 2'000m below, be aware that you will need time to go back to Zermatt via lifts... If you will enjoy the closer skiing area Cervinia head to Plan Maison (better option is to access via Theodulpass) .
You will see the other side of The Cervino (the name of The Matterhorn in Italian), a surprising view (see photo)... On the 350km slopes, 130km is on the Italian side Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche. An excursion to this side is worth as slope are steeper than on the Theodul Glacier (Matterhorn Glacier Paradise).
Tips:
1) Do not forget your ID as you are crossing an international border Switzerland - Italy
2) Take some Euro with you to avoid to pay a quite defavorable exchange rate (CHF/EUR) if eating on Italian side...
For a lunch with view...
by Tripack about Rifugio Guide del Cervino
This high altitude restaurant is located on the Plateau Rosa close to the Theodul pass and Testa Grigia at 3'480m just at the Italian and Swiss border.
At the first floor you will find a self service bar, you must order first to the cashier and pay your meal before to get served. Price is proportionnal to the altitude I mean high... Do not pay in CHF or you will have the bad surprise to have a quite unfavorable exchange rate. I would advise only to have a quick snack over there to enjoy the viewThe view from the terrace. An ground floor you will find a restaurant for more consitent meal on a panoramic terrace well protected from wind by a window fence.

Hi,
Anybody familiar as to how I can go from Zermatt to Cervina...i.e. by chairlifts?
And is it possible to go up the Matterhorn and ski down to Cervina
Thanks,

Yes, and then once in Cervina there is a lift that takes you back up.

From Zermatt two possibilities:
1) by cable car to the Klein Matterhorn
2) by skilifts to the Testa Grigia
then down to Cervinia via the Plateau Rosa/Testa Grigia
You will find an excellent ski area map under this link:

Thanks for the reply.
This is my first time in the Alps. Can you tell me what the blue/red lines stand for in the ski map?
Are they similar to the difficulty in the states? i.e. blue square/ black diamond
RE: RE: From Zermatt to Cervina

Hi,
blue = easy difficulty / beginner skier
red= medium / good skier
black= hard / good skier
yellow= off piste
Time travel from Zermatt by cable car Matterhorn Express - Furi (change) - Trockener Steg (change) - Klein Matterhorn would be approx. 45min or more depending of the skier flows/waiting time. Then down to Cervinia about 30 min.
Same time to go back to Switzerland.

Thanks for the expertise, do you know if there's a certain lift restrictions
in the Italian side if I were to purchase the international ski pass over at Zermatt?
and if conditions change while I am Cervinia, is there a shuttle or anything that can take me back to Zermatt?

What kind of shuttle do you mean? There is an over 3000 m high pass between.
The only way to get from Zermatt to Cervinia is either skiing (with the help of lifts) or helicopter, or the looooooong way around the mountains (half a day one way). If the conditions change while you are on the other side, tough. You will have to weather out the "conditions" and get back to Zermatt the same way as you went or... look for a hotel in Cervinia.

Its a 6 hour climb to the top of the Matterhorn and then another 6 hours climb down to Cervinia!
