Getting to Locarno

by ksk1

I am flying to Europe to go to Locarno for a conference.

Is it easier to get to Locarno from Milan or Zurich? I am interested in train service or other convenient quick method.

Do you mean from Zurich or Milan Airport?

You can catch a train in the basement of Zurich Airport. Travel time is a bit more than 3 hours, with connections at Zurich main train station and sometimes Arth-Goldau and Bellinzona.

From Milan's train station, it's about 2 hours to Locarno, with a change in Bellinzona or Giubiasco. I do not have up-to-date information on service from Malpensa Airport to Milan train station, nor on any buses that might go directly from Malpesna to Locarno.

Hy,
there are also buses from MI-Malpensa to Bellinzona railstation: http://www.malpensaexpress.ch/index.asp. The site is in Italian only but easy to understand. From Bellinzona to Locarno there are many trains daytime:

Travel Tips for Locarno

Goldeneye bungy jump

by Parsley27

Do the same bungy jump as James Bond at the start of the Goldeye movie! It also may be the longest jump in the world, although this seems to be rather disputed. At 220m it's an incredible height to jump, and the surrounding countryside only adds to the event. Spare underwear.

Hydrofoil on Lago Maggiore

by Callavetta

It's drizzly and raining on Lago Maggiore - what to do? Take a boat ride!.

My first full day in Locarno was met with drizzly weather. No problemo! I walked through the drizzle along the wonderful promenade to the dock from which the boats depart for all of the ports along the beautiful Lago Maggiore. The view from the water gives one a completely different perspective of the region. While a drizzly day leaves low, whispy clouds hanging on the hillsides and ruins plans to take one of the cogwheel trains or gondolas to the top of the mountain, it offers a beautiful view of the little historic towns and villages along the lake.

For this trip I took the hydrofoil, a two hour ride from Locarno to Stresa (in Italy). Slower boats make more stops and can take up to 5 hours to get from the northern most part of the lake to this popular Italian destination. The boat also stopped at Isola Madre and Isola Bella, two islands with luxurious gardens and castles (along with requisite restaurants).

Stopping in Stresa, I strolled around the cobblestone streets, shopped for beautiful Italian pottery, antique jewelry, and bought postcards (all that I could afford in this pricey enclave!). I had a wonderful lunch of fresh grilled vegetables, calamari fritti and a small jug of good Italian red vino. While I waited by the lake for the return boat I watched workers with a crane move a huge palm tree onto a barge for tranporting out to one of the islands. Italian skippers tried to hustle tourists into taking their boat over to Isola Bella, just offshore.

Locarno-o-o-o-o-o

"2nd coming."

This trip was a fantastic 3 week epic using the all encompassing Swiss Pass. Budget flight to Bergamo form Glasgow then we hit the rails. Train travel became our home for 3 weeks. When you board a train, get settled and suddenly feel like you've arrived home... then you have reached the equivalent of nirvana in train terms.

After arriving in Locarno with 2 days camping we headed east on the centovalli line. Finish this later... I need to get back to the day job!

"Initial approach."

My first ever trip to Suiss was in 2003. Having bought a 20 year old VW vanagon I caught the ferry from Rosyth to Zebrugge, an overnight beer fuelled evening did nothing for my bearings on navigating Belgiums roads but onward... Belgium, France Luxemburg, Germany and finally Switzerland. Best night to the date I was there was an overnight doss in Brekenried - beautiful, stunning and fresh water swimming.

Arrived in Locarno to what can only be decribed as a van fest of VWs all ages, colours and conditions... thought what the hell?? Then found out REM were playing in the town square. Next day everyone strangely disappeared and we were told to get our camp moved to the campsite or else!! In the nicest possible way. Chow for now...
