Believed to be Italy's part of Lake Lugano
Does anybody know how long it takes to get from Lugano (airport) to Menaggio? I'm seeing 18 kilometers from town to town but don't have any idea what buses run or how long they take. Is taxi an option and if so how much do they cost? It sounded like a lot of people commute from Menaggio to Lugano for work but I can't seem to find how long (time wise) that is.
Thanks,
Mike P.
You can get from Lugano Airport to the Lugano station by post bus. Check out:
http://www.lugano-airport.ch/welcome.cfm?page=muoversi&sub=3 for details.
From Lugano, you should be able to pick up a post bus from Lugano to Menaggio. Check out http://www.menaggio.com/ita/e-lakes/Orari_bus.pdf for the schedule.
Sorry, the schedule is in Italian only; by my imperfect Italian reading skills, "orario invernale" means "winter schedule," and "orario esternale" means "summer schedule." "Fer 6" means the bus runs Monday - Saturday, "Fest" means Saturday-Sunday, "Fer 5" means Monday-Friday, "F" means non-school days, and blank columns indicate daily departures.
Enjoy your trip!
Mark

this is an easy hiking trip from Lugano. From the Paradiso area you take the funicular up Monte San Salvatore, and then you follow the signs pointing you to a path leading to Carona. it takes about an hour down, and carona's a traditional interesting old stone village. There are also restaurants to stop for a drink or something to eat. From there on you follow the signs to parco san grato (a botanical park) and then continue towards morcote/vico morcote. before the path diverges you find another little restaurant in the middle of an alm (you'll probably find cows too). I suggest you take the path to Vico Morcote, since it's less steep and more interesting - plus vico morcote's a very tiny but lovely village. Eventually when you reach it you'll find another sign pointing you to Morcote, an old (slightly touristic) old fishing village. From there you can return to Lugano either by bus or by boat.
Warning: the last one leaves at arounf 5 PM sturdy walking shoes and a little bottle of water.
Where does the path go to?
It is to the west of Carona and the path into the wood looks inviting, it is not far to go and the walk is not steep. come along and enjoy a fresh looking grove of trees.
After all the next bus is still 2 hours to wait.
It is 6 km to walk back to Lugano.
We could have that refreshment after, when we get back.
The food is very good, but the main reason that makes this place special is the party ambience in the evening, when people start dancing with maracas and sombreros, and the marqueritas and tequilas never stop flowing. Patate olé (potatoes with sourcream and guacamole)
Fonduta latina (fonded cheese over tortillas)
Take the cable railway up Mount San Salvatore (912m) to get a spectacular view of Lugano and its surroundings.
Enjoy a drink at the café at the top then walk down through the woods to the village of Carona. It's a steep decline but reasonably easy walking and in March, you can see a lovely display of woodland spring flowers.
When you get to Carona, if you are fit enough, you can continue on to The San Grato Botanical Park which also affords spectacular views. Otherwise, catch the Post Bus back to Lugano.
