    Hotels in Lugano are expensive. Also, there is only one actually in the centre of town. All the others are either at the far end of the lakeside road or on the hill above. I chose one of the latter, the BW Albatro, as I didn't want to be too far out of town. Although it is a steep climb up/down steps to/from the town centre and the lakeside, there is a funicular opposite the railway station which provides a solution for those unwilling or unable to manage the steps. My single deluxe room was, in fact, a twin and was comfortable and clean, had a nice bathroom and all the usual ameneties. The only thing lacking was tea/coffee making facilities, which although advertised by Best Western as standard in all their hotels, wasn't forthcoming, despite my querying it. I was told that I could request coffee whenever I wanted one but on doing so, found it was NOT free of charge! Breakfasts were good and plentiful. On the downside, the front of the hotel is on a busy main road and the back overlooks the railway line so prepare for noise if you like having the window open. However, given the alternatives, I would probably stay here again as it provides a good and comfortable base for anyone not intending to spend much time in their hotel.
