Como to Lugano

by alexhill

Hi
I am staying for a week in Como town in September, is it worth doing a day trip to Lugano and if so what is the best way to get from Como to Lugano.
Many thanks
Alex

Lugano is well worth a visit from Como. The journey by train only takes 45 minutes and they are reasonably frequent.
Your best station is Como San Giovanni where you can get a direct train.
Check out www.trenitalia.com - feed in your departure station(as above)and your arrival point(Lugano).
This will give you a timetable

The direct train is indeed very easy to do. However, if you have a car as we did, the trip going and coming can be made very interesting and beautiful. If you are going to have a car, let me know and I will fill you in on the circle route we took. N.

Hi Dominic
The train seems to be ok. Will i need to get Swiss Francs or do they take Euros and how about the language, I have just enough Italian and Spanish to get by, will this be ok.
Many thanks
Alex

We were in Lugano about five years ago and used Euros and credit card every place. Lugano is more Italian than Swiss. I loved it, and could live there if I could get my wife to move. It is well worth the trip.

ESCAPING TO THE SUN

by nygaston

The next day we thought we'd try another gentle, down-valley walk in the Val Maggia. When the postal bus delivered us to the hamlet of Cavergno, however, a chilly mist was spilling over the crest of the Alps from northern Europe. Pulling on polarfleece sweaters and nylon pants, we started down the path along the valley floor.

Soon a light drizzle was falling and we fished our rain parkas out of our packs. Beneath our hoods Jeri and I looked at each other and shook our heads. Hiking in the damp chill is something you often have to put up with north of the Alps, but not here in Ticino. A few minutes down the valley, in the village of Bignasco, we jumped aboard another postal bus and within an hour were back in bright sunshine, walking along the lakeside promenade in Ascona, past palm trees and flower gardens.

This colorful, inviting town, filled with galleries and museums, is the Sante Fe of Ticino, attracting writers and artists from all over the Continent, including, over the years, Hermann Hesse and Paul Klee. Peeling off our polarfleece, we found a table in a cafe along the promenade and ordered a bottle of white Merlot. And that's how we spent the afternoon - soaking up the balmy Mediterranean sun, inhaling the fragrant breeze and watching the lake steamers out in Lago Maggiore, crisscrossing back and forth between Switzerland and Italy.

Carona/Ciona. When I first...

by worldtrekker

Carona/Ciona. When I first arrive someplace (like Lugano), I often look through the postcards in the souvenir shops to get an idea of what there is in the area if I'm not very familar with it. I'll see some pictures of places that I think look interesting or are particularly scenic and I'll attempt to go to that place. If it's not obvious, I'll ask around or check in some travel guides (sometimes right in that store). This building (in the photo) is one which I saw on a postcard and it intrigued me to check out this charming little town. I don't remember exactly, but I believe those were bananas hanging on the wooden beams. My photo doesn't do it justice. The postcard was MUCH better! :) As you can see, we were about the only people here except for the scooter lady.

chiesa santa maria degli angeli

by call_me_rhia

This church, santa maria degli angeli (holy mar of the angels) is a little unassuming and uninviting church at the end of the main shopping street, via nassa. you would not think much of it from the outside, but once you go inside there are wonderful frescos by bernardino Luini to discover. One of them - the most spectacular one, is 110 square metres large and shows 7 episodes of the passion of christ, all intermingled among each other
