Things to do in lugano
by sbmmava
Hello all,
What are the things to do in Lugano and surroundings in a day? After we get out from train, can we walk to all the places or do we have to take some other kinds of transportation? also do any of you know how much all the attractions costs in Lugano area?
I happened notice Rail tour on the web yesterday, have any one of you taken Bernina Express Rail Tour to the Swiss Alps from Milan. It is kind of Pricey 160 dollars/person. They take you to St. Moritz Resort at the end.
We want to go to switzerland from Milan for a day, do you guys recommend Lugano area? or this train trip?
Thanks in advance.

Whilst you are waiting for other VT-ers to reply, have a look at the Vt Lugarno guide here;

Lugano is one of most favorite spots. We did a pre cruise trip there from Genoa to there via train with a couple hour stop in Milan in route. You will need to take a short taxi ride from the train station to city center. We stayed at the Hotel International, which was right in the heart of things. We walked to the main city square and hung out for food and drink. We also took the tram to the top of Mt Brea (I think that is the name), which gives you a great view over the lake and area. A few people in our group rented a car and drove to see the Matterhorn. That was an all day trip and not something I would suggest. Lugano is probably the closest into Switzerland you can get from Italy. I think it is the next stop after leaving Lake Como and is just over the border.

The train station is within walking distance of the town and it`s downhill but returning you may need transport. There are a number of interesting places in the town or you can take a ferry to (eg Campione)or you can use the cable car to get a nice view. Lugano is quite close to Milan so it would be a good day trip.
Travel Tips for Lugano
The beauty of Lugano
by maritagnes
Arriving in Lugano by car is an eyecatching experience, and I couldn't believe the beauty while approaching there.
This town is situated at the edge of Lake Lugano - Lago di Lugano - and is the largest town in the canton of Ticino.
Bern clock and street scene in miniature.
by dabidc
In Melide there is an interesting open air musem with many Swiss buildings in miniature, include a lake scene and a small train moving across the scene, then it is a place worthy of a visit.
The museum is located to the west of the land bridge carrying road and rail traffic to Italy.
GRAVESANO - the village I used...
by arkadia
GRAVESANO - the village I used to live the last 6 years. It has a very cute 'nucleo' which is the old center of the village. People used to build their houses close to eachother to save the energy. Only later the villages spreated out. Walk through the narrow street of the village and visit the nice church.
Like here you can see the snow, which, compared to Lugano is not that rare. Gravesano is about 500 m.o.s and so it's much easier that we get, sometimes, more snow then the rest of the town.
There is an airport in Lugano...

There is an airport in Lugano but it is only a little one and so you always have to take a transfer in Geneva, Basel or Zurich. But I think it's mostly easier and cheaper to fly to Zurich, Basel or Geneva and then take the train.
Go to the top of Monte Bre!
by musti72
Take a trip with the funicular from Cassarate (10 minute walk east from the center or bus nr. 1) to the top of the Monte Bre, 660 meters above the city. There you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views one can have around Lugano!
From the summit café you see the lake, the Lugano Bay, the San Salvatore and the Monte Rosa massif.
