Experience all you can! Lugano is Switzerland's southernmost tourist town and offers an excellent combination of sunny days, watery pursuits and hillside hikes. It's Ticino's largest city with a population of around 30,000 and is located directly on the shore of beautiful Lake Lugano. The train station is above and west of the old town. Take the stairs down from here to the center which is dominated by piazzas. The way down is steep but I found it to be a great introduction to Lugano. There are stores lined on both sides of this steep, mostly pedestrian only, descent. The old town has winding alleyways, pedestrian-only piazzas, and colorful parks, which makes this an ideal town to walk around in. There's lots of fresh fruit displayed in these picturesque alleys, as well as baked goods, and hot foods including pizza and sausages. I stocked up on this great looking fruit as we had a long hike planned. Strolling through the old town left me with a really good feeling. I loved the mix of Italian flavor and Swiss order. Everything was so clean!
You won't find much on this page about museums, galleries, or churches as I'm not usually passionate about those things. When I'm in a naturally beautiful place such as this, I always try to get out into nature. Here, I did an extended day hike with my brother Stefan, from the top of Monte San Salvatore on to explore some little mountain-top villages and to end up at another seaside town. We then took a boat ride back to see this area from the Lake. Photo: Lugano postcard of Lake Lugano and Monte San Salvatore. Lugano has been called the 'Rio de Janeiro of the Old Continent' for the resemblance that Monte San Salvatore (912m) bears to Rio's Sugarloaf Mountain. Walking the length of the promenade on the waterfront at night with all the city lights, Monte San Salvatore, Monte Bre and a full moon. It was very enchanting.
Walk on the Sentiero di Gandria footpath
by musti72
The Sentiero di Gandria (or Sentiero degli ulivi) footpath starts in Castagnola (Bus Nr. 1) and ends after 30-45 minutes in Gandria, on the border to Italy.
The walk is entirely on the lakefront and goes through the gorgeous Parco degli ulivi, a mediterranean park with olive trees, cypress, laurels, oleander and rosemarine. The ending point is the picturesque village of Gandria, built from the lake up the steep hill.
From here you can walk back the same path or take the boat back to Lugano and have another perspective of the area.

If you walk through the town centre to the lake, and walk left along the lakeside you come to a little park. This is a really pretty place where locals take their children and dogs. It has some nice views of Mont St Salvatore and Paradiso.
Ristorante Cantinone
by worldtrekker about Ristorante Cantinone
Nice outdoor seating on the Piazza Cioccaro. They have a large selection of good sized pizzas and are open daily from 9am to midnight. This was the only restaurant we ate in here and it was on the first night we arrived. By the time we were checked in, etc. at the Montarina it was quite late and a lot of places had already closed. This place is open until midnight, so very convenient! The food was good too! Nice place to eat Italian and drink some wine. pizza

Ascona is one of the many very pituresque lakeside towns in this region. It is situated on the Lago Maggiore, a good half hours drive from Lugano. Nice outdoors restaurants, absolutely ideal for a drink and people watching. It is also an artists place with many galleries and lovely boutiques. Ascona is loved by the Germans, so much so, that the waiters might address you in German, which doesn't make the locals too happy, because they are worried their language might become an endangered species.
