River cruise dock in Basel

by TravelTwee

Hello,

I'll be on a Grand Circle Travel river cruise starting in Basel and want to know where the river cruise boats usually dock. I'm trying to figure out where to stay in Basel the day before. I can't seem to find the exact area on a map.

Can someone help?

Also, do you think doing a river cruise (Basel to Antwerp) in late November a bad idea? Is it too cold to enjoy Basel this time of the year?

Also, will the city be decorated in Christmas lights at this time?

Thanks for any help.

I can't find any info, but generally there are two (main) docking possibilities for cruises in Base. One is at the Rheinhafen/Dreiländereck (Rhine port / 3 countries corner), the other is at the Schifflände - that is just in the middle of Basel at the Mittlere Rheinbrücke - middle rhine bridge.
Both docks are good accessible via the public transport, so it wouldn't matter much where you stayed the night.
To be sure: why not ask your cruise operator?
Late November can (but must not necessarily) be quite cold. It really depends on the weather. Last year we had wonderful weather, quite warm (around 15 degrees), the year before it was bitter cold and rainy. With the right clothes it shouldn't really be a problem, either.
And yes, by late November (starting 20th of Nov) the Cristmas decorations will be up - and there is a good Christmas market on the Barfüsser Platz you may want to have a look at.

Thank you so much for your help.

I did call the cruise company but they didn't give me a name of where we will dock. I'll check back with them and see.

Travel Tips for Basel

Internet Access

by german_eagle

I know that Switzerland is infamous for being expensive (hm, I do only partly agree). For those of us who need to check their emails and send e-greetings to the world out there (especially to VT!) - here is a tip:

Go to the Central Post Office in the old town (Freie Strasse, see also Off The Beaten Path Tip) where really cheap Internet access is available.

I could not believe it at first. You have to insert a 1-Sfr-coin and then you can surf and surf and surf ... For some special websites (safe connections e.g.) you are charged (a low rate), but VT e.g. was free. I almost spent a half hour there and could probably have spent an hour or more for this 1 SFr.

Wild Maa at Vogel Gryff

by Myndo

The Wild Maa (wild man) is another of the three Representants of the three Ehrengesellschaften of the smaller Basel. (see under Vogel Gryff tip)

For a child is it an impressive and maybe frightening figure. It wears a crown and belt of ivy with apples in it and it is swinging a smaller tree ....

But the apples are special. The children are trying to "steal" one of them from the Wild Maa....
And if you are a woman and happen to get one of them as a present from the Wild Maa it is said that you are going to be pregnant - and soon!

7 kgs of apples the wild man has on him - but as you see in the picture they are all already gone ... so maybe he is not so a bad guy at all?
But uiuiui that tree can stitch if you happen to get to careless!

Dreiländereck

by Onedragon

Dreiländereck (Three Countries’ Corner), marked by a futuristic rounded steel-and-glass building. This is the Restaurant Dreiländereck (061/639 95 40), a pricey and rather soulless place for eating, but not bad for a riverside coffee and bun. Just beyond the restaurant, on the very nose of the spit of land is a tall, slender sculpture pointing the way west across the Rhine (the other bank is France), north to the German customs shed 50m away, and south into Switzerland

Hauptpost

by german_eagle

The central post office building (Hauptpost, located Freie Strasse, centre of the old town) was built 1853 in Neo-Gothic style by J.J. Stehlin, a popular local architect. In 1880 another complex was added. The public hall is decorated with beautiful frescos (theme: Transportation in past and presence) by Burkhard Mangold (1909/10), restored 1977.

From outside the buildings looks rather dark and massive (sandstone), but I was very surprised when I went in and saw the light hall with tall pillars and the stunning pictures. Really a gem. (See my General Tip "Internet" as well.)

Elevator Petersgasse

by german_eagle

Basel's old town is built on hills. Steep hills, that is. You'll definitely notice when dragging your luggage from the tram stop to the hotel. I was more than glad to find the elevator at Petersgasse (thanks to my resident friend) which saved me some sweat. It is located in the courtyard of the police headquarter at Spiegelgasse and takes you up to Petersgasse - an elevation difference of maybe 15 m. Best thing is that it is free and open 24/7 :-)
