Excellent location, however rather loud

The hotel is very well located just opposite the main railway station, convenient to many city trams which take you quickly into downtown (Trams 8 and 11, 3 stops away), only about a 15 - 20 minutes walk to the old city centre .
There is no minibar but free drinks (bottled water and cans of coke, juice etc) whenever you want from the ice rooms on each floors - buffet-breakfast as much as you want and a bar with smoking area.

Unique Quality: The hotel is very clean and comfortable, not luxurious but much more than adequate.
Public transport in Basel and region free of charge. Wireless Internet available in the entire hotel costs US$10.00 per hour. Private parking is possible on site and costs US$20.00 per day.

Update by VT member Nemorino: From the hotel room you can not see so many bicycles any more, because most of them are now parked in the new underground bike station.
Thanks Don!!

Excellent hotel near the railway station

I stayed at the 3* Schweizerhof Hotel for 3 nights during Easter weekend in April 2007.

I booked the hotel via www.bookings.org and paid 125 CHF (approx 50 GBP) per night for a Business Single room, including breakfast and a free public transport pass for the duration of my stay.

Location

Schweizerhof Hotel is located practically next door to the Swiss/French railway station. If arriving by plane, catch the airport bus (cost: 3.80 CHF) from Euroairport to the railway station and the hotel is less than a minute's walk away. Trams and buses stop right outside the hotel. Trams 8 and 11 go to the Alt Stadt. The hotel is located a 5-10 minute walk from Tinguely Fountain, 10-15 minutes from Alt Stadt and 15-20 minutes from the banks of the Rhine.

Room

My Business Single room consisted of a very comfortable double bed, a flat screen TV (21 local and international channels, including BBC News and CNN), free wi-fi access, a desk and chair, a leather armchair, a telephone, a wardrobe and coffee and tea making facilities. Despite my room overlooking the tram and bus stops below, I was never troubled by any noise from passing vehicles.

The room does not contain a minibar, but instead there is a room with a fridge, an ice machine and complimentary drinks on each floor of the hotel. Free drinks include bottled water, cans of Coke and Diet Coke, ice tea and cartons of orange and lemon juice, but no alcoholic beverages.

The en-suite shower room was spotlessly clean, contained lots of complimentary toiletries and fresh towels were provided daily. The walk in shower was very spacious and hot water was available 24 hours a day.

Maid service was carried out daily.

Unique Quality: .

Breakfast

The hotel offers a very impressive continental buffet breakfast. This includes numerous varieties of cereals, yoghurts, fruit salad, croissants, bread rolls, toast, boiled eggs, a platter of local cheeses, cold ham, turkey and salami, dried fruits, a selection of jams and nutella chocolate spread. A huge variety of fruit teas are available, as well as orange/lemon/pineapple/grapefruit juices, and coffee or tea is brought to your table. Breakfast is served from 7am to 11am (or at least it was during Easter weekend) and you can eat as much as you like. On Easter Sunday, all the tables contained complimentary chocolate Easter eggs.

Hotel

The hotel has a 24 hour reception which is staffed by very friendly, multilingual staff. The young lady on reception when I arrived was happy to provide me with a free city map and to point out the best places to visit in the city.

Car parking is available outside the hotel, while all public transport during your stay is free thanks to the complimentary transport card given to all guests. This includes all buses and trams in the central areas of the city as well as the airport shuttle bus.

The hotel has a bar and an upmarket restaurant and provides the necessary facilities for conducting business meetings.

Overall, this is a very modern, well-equipped hotel and I would highly recommend it to business and leisure travellers alike.

A good value hotel in a very convenient location. Deserves more than the official 3* rating that it has been given. Very highly recommended!!
