Most swiss [people will have a post box at the post station in the centre of their own..but I liked this one we saw as we walked up to the alpine garden above Adelboden - a swiss cow mailbox! So typically Swiss!

"The village Adelboden"

Adelboden is located in the Western part of the Bernese Alps, where the mountains are considerably lower than in the Jungfrau region, but still impressive with glaciers. The advantage is that this area is (mostly) not crowded and less touristy. Adelboden itself nestles on a sunny slope at the end of the Engstligen valley, offers a great variety of accommodation from apartments to four-star hotels, good restaurants and cafes, groceries and shops etc.

"The scenery"

Adelboden nestles on a sunny terrace above the valley floor, which provides stunning views of the main crest of the Bernese Alps over there. The green glen of the Engstligen creek stretches toward the Wildstrubel massif (3243 m) with some glaciers. At the back of the village the mountains reach 2700 m.

A number of cable cars and gondolas run up to the surrounding mountains and take you to wonderful viewing points as well as starting points for hikes.

Beautiful farmers' houses are spread all over the green meadows, and you'll see many cows on the pastures. It's a picture book landscape, rural but surprisingly lively.

"Neighbouring areas"

When in Adelboden you MUST do day trips to the neighbouring areas. Not to miss is of course the Jungfrau region with world-famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau (in case you haven't been to so far).

But what comes to mind are day trips to Lenk and the Simmental with gems of architecture and art, hikes over passes to Kandersteg, a visit of Thun and its lake.
