Perhaps it was because my single room cost 245 francs. Perhaps it was the blood stains on the pillow. Or the single, tiny bar of soap in the bathroom. Or the wake up call that never came. Or the room service dinner that I had to throw away because the supposedly kosher meal dish was adorned with chunks of bacon. Or the faded, forelone look of a place that had seen better days and was limping along. Or perhaps it was because the owner threatened to call the police when I told him I wanted to check out early. Of the fact that I was billed twice and it took 45 minutes to straighten out the bill when I did finally check out the next day.
What a sad, sad place!
This hotel is rated a Fodor's Star and has earned every bit of the rating. This picture is only one of the antiques that we had in our room. The room was exceptionally large. There is also a snug hotel bar that is one of the most beautiful that I've seen. 14 room, make this a small, personable hotel. Across the street are excellent restaurants, and a very upscale antiques shop.
These are nice Hotels and worth the price if you are just staying a few nights- There is a well organized tourist center in the train station where you can book hotels and we also have a youth hostel.
Hotel Belle Epoque
For the romantic in all of us!
This is a very personal, pretty hotel, decorated in 1920's style.
There are 17 rooms and the hotel is open all year round:
Singles rooms range from Sfr. 190.- to 225.-
Doubles: SFr. 270.- to 320.-
Breakfast is SFr. 15.- per person
Unique Quality: For anyone with a fascination for art nouveau then this the hotel to stay at. The hotel was recently renovated and refurnished and features art nouveau furnishings with art from the early 1900's. Every room has it's own unique colour scheme and range from very spacious to small and cozy, depending on the room price. The rooms with a view face the main road but those towards the back are very quiet. From here you can get to the Münster, the Bear Pits or down to the river Aare in minutes. There is a lovely breakfast room, a bar and a very good, elegant restaurant, Le Chariot.
I stayed at the Belle Epoque once as way of a surprise and will always remember it with fondness.
Directions: Hotel Belle Époque is located on the edge of the old city, take the Bus Nr. 12 'Schosshalde' from the main station to the bus stop 'Nydegg'.
