Left Luggage at Train Station

by riorich55

My wife and I will be stopping here on our way from Paris to Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. Since we will get here around 12:30 in the afternoon I thought it would be a good time to spend 3 to 4 hours having lunch and walking the city. My questions are regarding our luggage. We will want to leave one large and two smaller airplane carry on's at the station. Is this type of service available in Bern? How large (dimensions) are the largest lockers or can we leave at the station and not in a locker? Costs?

Seems there are both lockers and a left luggage facility at Bern:

The official Swiss rail website (www.sbb.ch) shows that there is a Left Luggage office at Bern - see http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/reisemarkt/services/bahnhofsinfo/pos-services.htm?posid=1787
It gives only the times, however, but at least these times suit your plans.

Since it says "office", I am guessing that it is like the Italian model where there are not lockers, but a manned office, where it doesn't particularly matter what size your luggage is.

If you want more info, you can call them at 0900 300 300 (the Swiss number - I don't know what the country and city codes are or if this number is even accessible from France)...

I think I fantasised it, Bill. :-(

Every Swiss Train Station I know has lockers that are coin-operated.

These are blue and come in two sizes, the larger one (6 CHF from memory) should take all of your bags. The lockers time limit is more than your requirement too.

The Bern station is secure and I wouldn't hesitate to use these lockers over a manned service. The lockers are sign-posted with an image, I think it is a padlock. They are normally easy to find though, and if not, just ask.

Travel Tips for Bern

A Day in Berne

by Rhondaj

We came for the day to stroll and shop. Our little homebase village, Kandersteg, has very few shops. Berne's lovely old town is the perfect place to spend a day.

After arriving at Berne's train station, lower level, we started on Spitalgasse. As you travel down the streets, notice that their names change!

The old town is surrounded by the river Aare. If you were to look at a map, the old town is very much in the shape of a thumb of a hand surrounded by water.

Bern Tip

Visit the down-to-earth, city of Bern. Friendly people who speak the slowest Swiss dialect. Also the federal capital of Switzerland. Outside the city lies the farm-sprinkled lowlands of the Emmental region.

great advantage of bern are his arcades. which makes it a great place for shopping and sighteseeing in bad weather conditions. you can walk trough a big part of downtown only getting wet when you have to cross the street, otherwise you are always under the arcades.

Have you forgotten your umbrella? Don't worry. There are a lot of arcades where you can move without being out in the rain. But it often rains in Switzerland, so take your umbrella with you anyway:-)

Carneval in Bern

by aroundtheglobe

Though it's only the third biggest Carneval in Switzerland, the so called "Fasnacht" is one of the biggest and most entertaining events in Bern. For 3 days the whole city goes crazy. Thousands of People are strolling around dressed up, having fun. Carneval in Bern is usually in february or march.
