looking for apartment

by mitch_koh

Hi hi,

I’m a student planning to visit Bern university for exchange next year (Spring) I saw that you have rooms for rent but I can’t read German. So, may I know if there is inexpensive place to stay in berne. Any website in English that have info of the rent price, number of rooms and how far is it from the school and super market? Thank you so much for your help.

Do you by any chance think you are speaking to Bern university? Because the "you" who may have rooms to rent but in German could correspond to this part of the university's website, http://www.sub.unibe.ch/dienstleistungen/wohnen/index_ger.html
What is says is, the SUB has an accommodation office, and it gives you a link to a form to fill in (Wohnungs Ausschreibe Formular) describing your requirements, and contact address to send it to: SUB Wohn- und Dienstleistungsbüro, Brigitte Megert
Lerchenweg 32, 3000 Bern 9, wost@sub.unibe.ch.
I would suggest you deal with her, but please bear in mind that you really can't expect everything to be done in your own language, especially to the level of detail you require. Have a look at http://www.sub.unibe.ch/dienstleistungen/wohnen/befristete/index_ger.html bearing in mind that Miete means rent (price), "Anzahl Zimmer" means number of rooms and WG means shared accommodation. Few of them give this information but Nähe Uni/Bahnhof means near the university/station; for the rest you'll have to work it out location for yourself with a map of Bern. Don't expect to be told how far the rooms advertised are from the supermarket - local shopping and other facilities are best assessed when you visit the rooms in person.

Travel Tips for Bern

BernCard: a good deal

by hojasdehierba

We bought BernCard for our daytrip to Bern. It allows you to enjoy free unlimited travel on the public transportation system in the City of Bern and the surrounding region (zones 10/11). You have also free admission to the permanent exhibits at 27 museums, libraries, archives and gardens (excluding special exhibitions). For 24 hours, it costs 17 CHF. If you consider that the admission fee to Paul Klee Zentrum is 14 CHF and that you will need to take a tram to get there... it is really worth to buy it. We even catch a glimpse of the new Bern: we simply took a (free) tram which took us to BEA expo centre. There are also cards for 48 hours (27 CHF) and 72 hours (33 CHF). You can buy Bern Card at tourist centres

Go also to Restaurant 'Fisher-schtübeli' in the lower town on the ground where ther river is flowing. Go to the bar and say hello to a nice brasilian girl Isabella. Its all along the river, where you can hike along in dirction south. If you have a boat in summer you can floating down to my city from the city Thun.

Go shopping! I've heard that Bern is a big shopping destination for many people. The good thing about the city is that even in terrible weather, snow/rain, most of the city is made of covered arcades, or shops. So you could wander around under the roofs of all the covered stores.

walking tour of Old Bern

by btex

walk around the old part of the city there are many quaint old buildings, clock towers, statues/fountains. The picture shows one of the many fountains that you will encounter on a tour of Old Bern - the fountains are from the 15th Century and represent mythological and historical figures. Also, there are many opportunities for shopping as well: boutiques, antique stores, cafes, and so on....
