We need affordable lodging in Bern, preferably near the Paul Klee museum. We would be staying only one or two nights. We will be there in early October 2007. Any suggestions? Thanks!
There isn't anything really near the Paul Klee museum. The closest hotel would be "Bären" in Ostermundigen, but that is quite a walk away. The museum is at the end of busline 10, which runs about every ten minutes from the centre of town. So anywhere in the town centre would be fine. See www.bern.ch

Already in the middle ages the town had a supply system of running water, first with small wooden fountains. From the 16th century, the fountains were erected in stone and decorated with sculptures. Have a closer look at them. They are all different. Some show biblical themes, others allegories or historical figures.
One of them is really scary, the Kindlifresserbrunnen in Kornhausplatz. The "child eater" devours little babies. This is a shrovetide allegory.
Swiss street fountains provide, unless marked otherwise, clean and pure drinking water.
The most famous building to see is the Watch-Tower called 'Zytglogge', which means 'the bell of time'.
If you want to go there from the station, it takes only five minutes:
Bus Nr. 12 direction Schosshalde //
Tramway Nr. 9 direction Guisanplatz //
Tramway Nr. 5 direction Ostring //
Tramway Nr. 3 direction Saali
If you're in Bern in November you might have the chance to be there when it's Zibelemärit. This famous onion market starts in the early morning of every first monday in november. People from allover that country come to bern to admire the big market and the special atmosphere.
In the Kornhaus (not far away from the watch tower called Zytglogge, near the theatre) there are many exhibitions and a public library, where you can get informations or sit down and read newspapers it's free... and it's possible to check your mailbox... 5 minutes are free on the internet...

Q: Hotel Wilhelm Tell - Anyone out there with a Review? "Hello! I am down to my 6 days before getting to Bern and we are still going back and forth between hotels! Can someone please..."
A: "You're right, I've searched on-line and can't find reviews of this hotel. It's also not listed on VT. Sometimes "no review" is a good thing. A lot of the reviews out..."
