Various: Accommodation during Euro 08

Hi Ron

If you look at the following website there are many options including private rooms. With 5 persons you might have difficulties to stay at the same place together and I have no idea how much everthing is already booked.

http://euro08-bern.ch/?tkw=uebernachten

But if you google: euro 08 bern unterkunft ,you will get plenty of options beside the normal hotel booking options.
There is an initiative where privat people offer beds all over Switzerland for moderate prices. Probably a good opportunity get to know a few locals too.

Good luck

Various: Various Hotels

In Bern there are loads of hotels.
The cheapest I know of is the Hotel National in the Hirschengraben - just 200m from the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) - which is as cheap as CHF 55 (EUR 38) pppn.
The Hotel Bern (city centre) and Hotel Allegro (less than 5 minutes walk from city centre) are both fine and simple, and cost from CHF 90 - CHF 140 (EUR 94) pppn.
The Hotel Savoy is a good above-average hotel right in the centre, and the "creme de la creme" is the Bellvue which is just amazing.

The Golden Tulip - very nice!...

The Golden Tulip - very nice! Here's an early morning view from our window.

Restaurant California at the hotel was excellent - one of the best meals that trip. Ravoli with gruyere sauce and fresh asperagus.

I stayed at the youth hostel and it was very nice. The place was inexpensive and we met a lot of people from all over the world. There were tons of people who were just there to have a good time and were very sociable.

Chalet im Rohr is wonderful! ...

Chalet im Rohr is wonderful! It's right next to the town's church and within walking distance to the train station, a couple of restaurants, shops and hiking.
I'm not sure, but I think it was around 20 US$

The price was great. I stayed in a room on the top floor right underneath the gable of the roof. The view from the window was amazing. There is a self-service kitchen complete with oven, stoves, pots, pans, refrigerator, recycling bins, etc. There's also a large dining area with a piano. The family who owns it lives there and they're very nice and the whole building always smells of wonderful cooking. It's a creaky, old, wonderfully charming building. Even if I could afford an expensive hotel, I would stay at Chalet im Rohr again without a doubt.
