Typical Novotel
Just accross from the tram, only minutes from town.
Anonymous, unexciting Novotel offering good spacious rooms. Bed was comfy, water was hot and toiletries smelt nice. Apart from this, not much to say.
Breakfast is outrageously expensive at 25 Swiss francs, you are better off trying a conditorei in town.

Upgraded from the Ibis
As I was printing out my hotel confirmations that day before we left, I had a bit of a surprise, somehow I had forgotten to book our 1st night's accomodations, that would have been a rather unpleasant surprise to deal with all jet lagged! I was very pleased that the hotel I thought I had booked, the Ibis Bern Expo, still had availability a day before we were supposed to be there.
When we got to the hotel rather late the desk staff said there was a problem with our booking but not to worry, the Novotel next door had availability and they would charge us the same rate for the Ibis. A great deal considering the Ibis was 162CHF and the Novotel was 280CHF. And the Novotel only charged us 129CHF ($107US) even though our confirmation said 162CHF.
Unique Quality: The Novotel was much nicer than any of the Ibis hotels we stayed at but certainly not worth the difference in price.
The bed was OK, there was a minbar, TV, use of an exercise facility nearby, bicycles for use to get into the center of Bern since the hotel was not in the city center.
The toilet was in a separate room than the shower which would have been OK except there was no sink to wash your hands at in the room with the toilet. Shower pressure was OK, the water temperature went hot and cold, kind of like dorm showers in college. When someone flushed, you knew to get out of the way or you'd get scalded! Toiletries included soap, bath gel, shampoo and lotion. There was a hair dryer, the only one I got to use on this trip.
Parking was an extra 12CHF, breakfast buffet was a whopping 25CHF so we passed

Superb Quality Hotel
Absolutely spotless, modern, comfortable, spacious rooms, very friendly and incredibly helpful staff. On a trip around Europe in July - August 2005 this was the best Hotel we stayed in by far.
We ate dinner in the restaurant and it was superb quality - It was not overpriced either compared with eating in Berns restaurants. All the hotel staff were the most friendly we encountered in Europe - they treated us like royalty.
Receptionist was exceptional, especially with our children. Video games for the children, internet connection with keyboard and screen in the room.
Good quality breakfast with loads of choice.
Slight weakness was shortage of free parking available when the hotel filled up - though for $10ish a day they have a garage.
Well recommended.
