Hotels in Bern

by BrunoB

I'm planning a trip to Switzerland and Bern will be one of my destinations. Wich is the best neighborhood in the town to stay? Does Bern have subway?

Regards!

Re: Hotels in Bern

The old town would be the best, as it is quite nice. Bern doesn't have a subway as such (it is far to small for this) but the tram and bus system is quite good. the old town is easily explored on foot.

To add to KVB's answer: There are no "bad" neighbourhoods in Bern, you're safe pretty much anywhere. I agree that staying in the Altstadt is a good option (if you can afford the hotels), as you're right in the middle of everything. But even if you're not staying in the city center, you can get there by public transport (bus and tram) in a couple minutes. Bern is small :-).

There are indeed no "bad" neighbourhoods in Bern, but I would avoid the area around the main station at the moment. Mostly because right now that part of town is one big building site...

Hi all,

Will staying around the main station. Is the area easy to access (dragging the luggage) since I heard there is a construction nearby?

Thank you in advance.

the situation around the station has improved somewhat. Most of the big work is finished.
You won't encounter to much trouble now.

Travel Tips for Bern

The Roofs of Bern

by Zisch

When visiting Bern, it is absolutely necessary to go up to the top of the Münster Cathedral. The hundred + steps and the small entrance fee are worth it to see the city spread out beneath your feet. On a clear day, there is a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains.
The Münster was unveiled in all its new found glory on the 9th of November 2002 - the first time since 1954 that the front of the cathedral has been without scaffolding. Now visitors to catherdral can enjoy the full beauty of the archtecture.

Make sure to see the river Aare!

by Rhondaj

Make sure that you don't get so caught up in the maze of shopping streets, that you don't get to the river. Postgasse, Gerechtigkeitsgasse, and Junkerngasse all meet at the Nydeggbruecke.
Lovely view--have your camera ready!

Behind me is the Nydeggkirche

by Sharrie

Behind me is the Nydeggkirche (Nydegg Church) dating back to the 14th century. On the doors you can find bronze reliefs illustrating scenes from the life of Christ.

If you have time, walk along this direction and continue up Junkerngasse to Berne's late Gothic Cathedral (Munster). The Cathedral's greatest work of art is Erhart Kung's vision of the Last Judgement (1490-1495) above the main entrance. According to some who had seen it, the relief shows members of all classes howling in eternal damnation.

Basements

by jorgec25

Around the old town of Bern I saw lots of basements that are used as shops, offices, and even bars.

It seems a bit strange at first, because they usually are well underground.

But after a while we get use to it, and I especially liked the doors.

Bern is in the German-speaking...

by btex

Bern is in the German-speaking portion of Switzerland. I don't speak German, but I didn't have any trouble communicating. You'll find people who speak English...or you can just use sign language. I ordered a pastry from a non-English speaking woman by pointing at what I wanted and smiling...it worked!
