We had the “Dovecote” apartment - on two floors. Downstairs, there is a cosy lounge/dining area and a small kitchenette with a fridge and hot-plate – great for keeping and making drinks though not equipped for cooking meals. Upstairs, the main bedroom has a terrace looking to the mountain and the Rothorn steam railway. The children’s bedroom has twin beds - from the lounge it looks like a dovecote, complete with dove sized hatches for the kids to peep through.
The hotel restaurant has a magnificent view across Lake Brienz to the mountains beyond. Breakfast is excellent – cereals, fruit, red boiled eggs, meats, cheeses, rolls and croissants. Whenever a serving dish is emptied, one of the attentive staff refills it immediately. The selection changes daily. Restaurant meals aren’t cheap but are excellent and enjoy a good reputation amongst the locals. We often saw the chefs picking herbs in the hotel’s own garden for the evening meal – you can’t get fresher than that!
The kids enjoyed the hotel playground and the indoor pool was great for a rainy day or for relaxing after the day’s adventures. We were far too busy sightseeing to enjoy the lovely gardens!
The hotel is situated about ten minutes walk up from the station – with its good service to Interlaken and Meiringen and ferry around Lake Brienz. There is a good selection of restaurants in Brienz, 5 to 10 minutes walk from the hotel.
This excellent hotel made the ideal base for our best family holiday ever!
